Summary[]
Lucifer goes in search of his missing property and gets help from an unlikely source. Chloe asks Dan for help with the Palmetto case.[1]
Plot[]
During an evening at Lux, Maze beckons to a man who follows her upstairs and joins her in the penthouse hot tub, only for her to unexpectedly force his head underwater to drown him, holding him until Lucifer appears. The man turns out to be Sergei Bok, and Lucifer interrogates him about his stolen wings. Sergei says he knows nothing about them, and Lucifer begin to question his methods as its gotten him no where; "He's the fifth man we've accosted this week, perhaps we're, dare I say it, going about this wrong? It may be time to seek the help of a professional." He has Maze release Sergei before he drowns as he prepares to go meet with the detective the next day.
Next morning, at the precinct, Dan tries to convince Chloe to close her investigation on Malcolm and Palmetto street as Malcolm's wife is about to remove him from life support. Chloe is disappointed in him and thought they were making progress, but at the end of the day he seemed to be on "Team Everybody Else" again. Dan concedes, and tells her if she wants to act, she better act fast, and that she has 24 hours.
Lucifer reminisces to Amenadiel about leaving Hell and landing this very beach.
Lucifer appears at Chloe's place while she's studying the Palmetto case at home, he says as he enters; "Is this really what you do in your spare time? How fascinatingly morose." Chloe is annoyed at his presence and says it's not a good day for his "Luciferness". Lucifer notices she is distressed and offers an ear in return for some advice from her. She explains how Dan wants her to drop the Palmetto investigation, but that she wants find the truth. Lucifer says to find it, and she needs no one's permission because she is a detective. Chloe grants him that it's actually decent advice, and she says when she gets stuck on a case, she gets "someone who's not gonna be afraid to be honest... even if it's not what I want to hear." Upon receiving Chloe's advice, Lucifer leaves, just as Chloe was about to ask Lucifer for more of his insight on Palmetto.
It turns out Lucifer's fresh eyes are Amenadiel. However, Amenadiel seemed disinterested in helping clean up his mess, and tells Lucifer, "You wanted free will. You wanted accountability. Well, fix your own damn mess, for once." Amenadiel's rejection to Lucifer's request for help sends Lucifer back to Chloe for her help.
Chloe says she will only help if he tells her what it's really, really about. He finally admits that the stolen container had also held his angel wings, which are now missing. Chloe laughs, believing he is joking, but soon figures that he is being serious. She says if it is that important to him, she will help, and puts out an APB on the wings. Lucifer, in turn, agrees to help her with Palmetto along with Dan.
At Palmetto Street, Chloe has Dan and Lucifer elp her reconstruct the scene of the shooting. Where Chloe plays herself, peeking through the doors as Malcom - played by Dan, is shot by Nikolas Aoudi, a French drug trafficker - played by Lucifer. After running through the events, Lucifer points out, "It doesn't make sense... Aoudi would have no desire to kill Malcolm. Trust me, if there's one thing I know, it's desire. I mean, if Malcolm were indeed corrupt, he'd be Aoudi's golden goose. It'd be quite dumb to shoot him." Lucifer's conclusions raises the possibility someone else was there, but they are interuppted as a very confused Dan, notifies them that the FBI got a hit on Chloe's APB for angel wings.
After meeting an agent, he informs them the wings are to be sold at an auction along with some other religion-based "antiques", but that the FBI will be raiding the place, and once Lucifer can prove provenance, he can have his wings back in 30 days.
Lucifer, instead, attends the auction himself instead of waiting where he discovers Amenadiel lurking, who tells Lucifer, "I came to ensure the wings get back where they belong... They belong in the Heavens where they were created." Lucifer manages to get himself and Amenadiel into the auction without an invite by displaying his mysterious coin that he has been seen fiddling with as it levitates in his hands in previous episodes.
The auction host, Carmen Grant, is excited at the prospect of auctioning the mysterious coin after witnessing his expert's fascination of it. However, Lucifer informs him that it is not for sale. When security draws their guns, and Amenadiel dares them to shoot, Lucifer smooths it over, saying he'll be bidding for the wings.
Amenadiel asks why Lucifer is suddenly afraid of guns, and the latter admits "...seems I'm dealing with a bit of a mortality sitch. Hence: ixnay on the unsgay." Amenadiel is pleased with the prospect, and he says that "all I have do is wait for some pitiful thug to end you and right back to Hell you go."
Lucifer's wings supposedly on the auction block.
The first item for auction are chain links that supposedly held St. Paul. Amenadiel notes that Paul's wrists were too thick to fit into them, and Lucifer jokes about him being the saint of honey cakes, which send the two brothers into a laugh. Chloe then unexpectedly appears in a dress at Lucifer's side much to his surprise. He asks how she got in here and for the first time in the show, Chloe uses the word "mojo", as she says that Lucifer isn't the only one that's got some "mojo", referring to his mind tricks of Desire Exhibition. She reveals that she's here to warn him the FBI raid will be happening in five minutes. Lucifer then introduces her to Amenadiel as his brother. Chloe banters and flirts with Amenadiel for a moment, calling him "handsome" and remarking that all the charms in the family went to him until Lucifer tells them it's unsettling to see them get along. Carmen then reveals a set of angel wings, and a stunned Chloe breathlessly whispers that they are gorgeous. Suddenly, the FBI then raids the place, and Chloe spots Carmen slipping away, but finds he seems to have vanished into a brick wall. At Lucifer's request, Amenadiel slows time so that his brother could reach his wings before the FBI does. Upon approach, however, Lucifer realizes the wings on display are fake. Then, Chloe finds a secret passage and the FBI head into it. Lucifer is frustrated at the fact the wings were fake and refuses to help Chloe further on Palmetto upon her asking him to come with her. "So much for quid quo pro," she says as she leaves the auction. Amenadiel asks Lucifer what they do next, and Lucifer replies that "I'm afraid this is where I leave you, brother. What I'm about to do is the Devil's work."
Chloe and Dan return to Palmetto again to check Chloe's theory. They discover a secret passageway with and find a police-issued 999 key, which is proof of an inside man from the L.A.P.D. because Malcolm had his key on him. Chloe finally finds the evidence she needs to prove that a second cop knew, and deduces that that same cop might've been the one that shot Malcolm.
Lucifer tracks down Carmen at a house listed under an alias, where he has been sitting, mesmerized as he stares at the wings. Lucifer enters, "I understand, perfectly. A lifelong atheist, you took one peek at the wings and something changed in you. The great white light was revealed and a believer was born, one who couldn't part with real divinity." He is then appalled to find his wings mounted for display, and in his fury tells Carmen they are his and demands to know who tipped him off about the wings.
Lucifer is then seen on the beach, where Amenadiel finds him. With the wings next to Lucifer, Amenadiel tries to convince Lucifer to return to Hell, only to watch Lucifer burn his wings; "It was you, brother. You tipped Carmen off, and you orchestrated the theft... Clearly you were desperate. I mean, you were willing to let a human die and unleash the wings upon the world just to remind me who I was. To fool me into desiring the wings and the hellish throne they accompany. Well, do you know what? It almost bloody worked." Out of rage that his plan has failed, Amenadiel then attacks his brother and Lucifer let him, encouraging him in his wrath, and shouts "fall as I did!" but Amenadiel stops himself.
Over at the police precinct. Anthony Paolucci is holding a goodbye ceremony to Malcolm as Malcolm's family pull the plug that night. To Anthony's revulsion, Chloe shows. However, to Anthony's surprise, she announces that she's found Malcolm to be a good cop, and that she is closing her investigation on Malcolm. As everyone drinks in his honor, Dan whispers to Chloe, "I hope you're right about this." Chloe responds that "if we're gonna find a dirty cop, it's best they don't think we're looking.
At an empty Lux the same night, Maze informs Lucifer she cleaned up his mess on the beach, and he tells her, "I truly hate to disappoint you, but... well, this is where I have to be now... and this isn't what you bargained for," but she tells him she is with him "until the end" because they are a team. She retreats as Chloe makes an appearance to speak to Lucifer. Chloe sits down next to Lucifer at the piano, and says she doesn't like how they left it at the auction. She tries to sympathize with him; "I can't pretend to understand why the wings meant to much to you. But if we're really friends... it should be enough just knowing that they did." Lucifer is pleasantly surprised at her comment, but informs her that the wings are old news. Lucifer explains that in his search for the wings, he realizes that is was just "a relic" that was worth "exactly what someone was willing to pay for them." He than asks about Palmetto, and Chloe confirms she found something. Lucifer hands her a shot, and says; "To our equally enigmatic futures" as they drink.
Above on the stairs, Maze examines a small case which holds a single feather she kept from Lucifer's wings...
At the hospital, the doctor pulls the plug on Malcolm, only for him to briefly flat-line before a hand on the glass causes him to be miraculously revived back to life. The hand is revealed to be Amenadiel's as the episode ends, and he walks away...
