Falling is how humans learn. It's how I learned. Look, I-- I lost my wings, my powers. I fell again and again. You know? And getting back up... well, that was the most empowering experience of my life.
— Amenadiel to Linda
in "A Chance at a Happy Ending"

Amenadiel is the eldest of all God's Angels and serves as a central character in Lucifer. Initially the primary antagonist of Season 1, he embarked on his own journey of growth and ultimately became one of Lucifer's closest allies. As the eldest in the family, Amenadiel was God's main enforcer and messenger for the majority of his lifetime, as he would be involved in fulfilling his Father's most important orders; these acts ranged from overseeing the banishment of Goddess to Hell, cursing Cain for killing his brother Abel, and traveling to Earth on God's behest in order to send Lucifer Morningstar back to Hell so he could resume his duties as its sovereign, as the latter would often become bored and leave his post. He was eventually tasked with blessing a woman who was unable to have a child, resulting in the birth of Chloe Decker.

By 2011, on one of Amenadiel's trips to Earth to retrieve Lucifer, he lost his necklace and was forced to make a deal with his brother to help retrieve it in exchange for letting him be. Five years later, Amenadiel returned to send him back, only for Lucifer to repeatedly refuse to give up his life in Los Angeles. With Lucifer refusing to go willingly, Amenadiel felt forced to resort to extreme measures: He used Lucifer's therapist Linda Martin to get information on him, starting a sexual relationship with Mazikeen, and even resurrecting Malcolm Graham to kill Lucifer so as to forcibly send Lucifer back, all of which ultimately failed. After realizing he had gone too far, Amenadiel asked for Lucifer's help in returning Malcolm to Hell. During their hunt for the corrupt cop, Amenadiel was stabbed by a Demon dagger, before Maze used a feather from Lucifer's wings to save him.

After learning that Goddess escaped Hell, Amenadiel joined Lucifer in his hunt for Her to send Her back. He soon discovered that he had lost his powers and believed God was punishing him for what he had done the previous year. After Uriel's eradication and learning that Chloe, Lucifer's LAPD partner, was the child of the woman he blessed, Amenadiel grew furious at their Father for manipulating them all without explanation. Becoming his own man, he aided their Mother in Her quest to return to Heaven using the Flaming Sword, only to discover that God had entrusted the final piece to him; his necklace. With this revelation, Amenadiel regained his faith in his Father, believing he was His favorite son. He also started a friendship with Dan Espinoza and temporarily regained his powers to slow down time to save Linda after she was seriously hurt by Goddess.

With their Mother in Her own universe, Amenadiel set out to prove himself to God so he could regain his powers and his wings. He believed Lucifer was his test; to help God's wayward son find redemption, and in helping him, he would be able to go home. He started a romantic relationship with Linda in secret so Maze wouldn't find out, but it eventually came to light and the two broke up. Amenadiel came face-to-face with Cain and, in a fit of fear and delusion, set out to stop Lucifer in helping him break his curse. He eventually learned that Charlotte Richards, Goddess's former host, was alive and developed a friendship with her, having Lucifer reveal his wings to her and exposing the Celestial world to her when she felt like she was going crazy. After a talk with Charlotte, Amenadiel realized that God was never punishing or testing him, and that he was actually responsible for punishing himself, and that Angels self-actualize. When Charlotte was murdered, Amenadiel regained his wings and flew her up to Heaven where she belonged.

After a month, Amenadiel returned to Earth and decided to live amongst humanity, feeling like Earth became more like his home than the Silver City. Despite a rocky start, Amenadiel discovered that he was going to have a son with Linda, something that would have been impossible had he not become compatibly Human after he lost his powers. He was soon paid a visit by Remiel, who intended to take the child to Heaven, but Amenadiel won a battle against his younger sister in deciding his fate. Amenadiel's feeling changed, however, after he witnessed racism and violence aimed towards himself and Caleb Mayfield. He intended to take Charlie to Heaven to keep him safe, but Linda's confessions in regards to her worries about having an angel baby made him reconsider. After Demons kidnapped him, however, and he and Lucifer rescued him, Amenadiel decided his son will be fine after Linda was willing to let her son go, believing the two will protect him on Earth.

In the following months after Lucifer returned to Hell to keep it in line, Amenadiel ran Lux in his absence and tried to make L.A. better for Charlie. However, with Michael's quest to ruin Lucifer's life on Earth, he retrieved Lucifer to stop him. After temporarily running Hell for a couple of days, Amenadiel returned to Earth when his father told him Hell no longer needed a warden. He helped Chloe resolve her issues after she found out about her divine birth and got her and Lucifer to reconnect. When Charlie got sick, he realized, thanks to Michael's manipulations, that Charlie was mortal. This caused him to have a panic attack and uncontrollably freeze time. Before he could fix his mistake, he and Lucifer were attacked by Michael and Maze in the precinct. After their fight was broken up by God's arrival, Amenadiel reverted to his old self and remained loyal to Him. However during their family dinner, he admitted that he wouldn't want to raise Charlie the same way his father treated his siblings, hinting at his frustrations with his father's negligence and cryptic nature. With God's announcement to retire, the angels unanimously wanted Amenadiel to take His place, but he ultimately declined, backing Lucifer's claim for the throne. Choosing to spend his life as a police officer helping others and living amongst humanity to raise his son, he had an argument with Dan when he misunderstood what the latter meant in regards to him choosing to be a cop. After Dan and Remiel were killed in Michael's campaign for Godhood, Amenadiel joined Lucifer in defeating their brother and happily led the others in taking a knee to the new God.

Now an officer of the law, Amenadiel served as a beat cop alongside Sonya Harris trying to fix the racial injustice in the police department. He was reunited with Dan after his spirit was brought to Earth by his future niece, Aurora Morningstar, and was able to make peace with him. After Lucifer abdicates his decision to be the new Sovereign of Heaven, Amenadiel decided to take on the responsibility, figuring this was their Father's plan all along, and convert the monarchy of Heaven into a democracy so he can still have a life on Earth with his son. Amenadiel also recieved joint ownership of Lux, deciding that he can also employ the rest of the angels and give them a chance to connect with humanity as they did, even learn to contribute to Earth to eliminate the need for "working in mysterious ways". Being able to multitask, Amenadiel was present for Charlie's second birthday, visibly thrilled he got his wings, help deliver baby Aurora, and brought Chloe's soul to Hell to be with Lucifer for eternity after she died from old age around 2060.

Biography[]

History[]

Creation[]

Amenadiel was one of the many Angels created by God and Goddess billions of years ago[1], he was not only the first born, but the first Archangel.[2] Amenadiel was given a necklace by God that he cherished.[3]

Growing Up In Heaven[]

As an young Angel, he played and trained with his siblings, however, he and the other Angels often excluded Uriel from their activities.[4] Despite Amenadiel neglecting Uriel, he would always take the blame for the pranks he played on Samael so he wouldn't get in trouble with their Father.[5] All of his siblings admired, respected, and even feared him.[4] He was very close with Remiel, with whom he hunted stags in the Silver City. Though annoyed with Castiel's singing, he tolerated his younger brother's poor attempts.[6] He would often be pranked by his siblings Samael and Azrael, but wouldn't retaliate against them.[7] He, however, would give Michael "atomic wedges"[8] whenever he made him think that he was Samael, giving himself away with his mojo.[9] Amenadiel grew to despise Michael's schemes so much that the mere mention of his brother's name irked him.[10]

Banishing Goddess[]

A few thousand years after Samael's, (now going by Lucifer Morningstar) rebellion, Amenadiel himself, took his own Mother, Goddess, to Hell under his Father's orders after She was causing chaos on Humanity.[11]

Cursing Cain[]

After Cain killed his brother, Abel, God sent Amenadiel to give him his mark, and cursed him to walk the Earth alone for a tortured eternity.[12]

Divine Birth[]

Amenadiel blesses Penelope

Amenadiel blesses Penelope Decker.

Circa 1981, for unknown reasons, God asked Amenadiel to go down to Earth and bless a couple who were unable to have a child of their own. That couple was John and Penelope Decker.[13] He went to a bar that Penelope was at and talked to her before covertly blessing her. Before he left, their picture was taken and hung up on the wall.[14] That was the first and only time God had ever asked Amenadiel to do anything like that.[13]

Retrieving Lucifer[]

Throughout the centuries, Lucifer would leave Hell to spend time on Earth; Amenadiel was sent by their Father to drag him back each time.[3] During the centuries of retrieving his brother, Amenadiel pranked Lucifer by spreading a story that he was affiliated with goats, which Lucifer hates.[15]

Deal with Lucifer[]

Losing his Necklace[]

Amenadiel comes to retrieve Lucifer

Amenadiel comes to retrieve Lucifer Morningstar.

In 2011, Lucifer left Hell and went to Los Angeles to have some fun. While he was in the middle of a sex party, Amenadiel arrived, slowing down time so the Humans wouldn't see him. Amenadiel felt pity for the Humans as they had no idea who they were having sex with, and put a woman's shirt back on. Though Lucifer tried to crack jokes, Amenadiel, not in the mood for his foolishness, stated it was time for him to take him back to Hell once again.

Lucifer, however, believed he let Amenadiel take him back, but the eldest brother pointed out that he was the strongest of God's children. When Lucifer tried challenging him to a battle, as he never fought him, Amenadiel reminded his younger brother that Celestial Beings aren't allowed to interact on Earth and insisted they go as it was dangerous for Humanity to be exposed to divinity.

When Lucifer made a joke, Amenadiel became frustrated and yelled that was enough of his tomfoolery. Amenadiel gave him a choice of either dealing with him or their Father's wrath, which made Lucifer uncomfortable. Relenting, he asked Amenadiel to let him at least say his goodbyes, so he allowed him to have 10 minutes and left the apartment to wait outside for him.

Amenadiel looses his necklace

Once outside, a young jogger stopped to admire Amenadiel's "dress", though he said it was a robe. Complimenting Amenadiel's style, the man jogs off, leaving Amenadiel annoyed by the Human. As he was about to walk away, he heard gunfire and a masked man ran up and spotted Amenadiel. The man then shot him, startled, Amenadiel fell "dead." When he recovered, he found necklace had been stolen by the thief.

Needing to retrieve his necklace before he takes Lucifer back to Hell, he returns to his brother's room to get a change of cloths to blend in while he searches. When he arrives, Lucifer questioned why there were holes in his robe, but Amenadiel, not wanting to tell Lucifer that he lost his necklace to a Human, tells him that he needs to run an errand for a few hours, then they'll return to Hell; the delay pleased Lucifer.[3]

Following Lucifer's Lead[]

Amenadiel goes to the LAPD for assistance

In Human cloths and shades, Amenadiel went to the Los Angeles Police Department and asked Officer Decker for her assistance in helping him find his stolen necklace, but in a way that confused the officer. She asked him standard questions involving a robbery case, which he answered, before giving her a sketch of the suspect with his hoody on to help her catch him.

She, however, thought the sketch looked like a jack-o'-lantern, but Amenadiel, who had no idea what that was, believed that was the man's named and asked her where he could find "Mr. O'-Lantern." Figuring this was one big prank, Officer Decker asked if Anthony Paolucci put him up to this. Amenadiel was offended that she would think he would lie and while she answered a call, he left.

Amenadiel asks Lucifer for his help

Amenadiel asks Lucifer for his help.

Realizing he needed Lucifer help, he returned to his hotel suite and woke him up. Embarrassed, Amenadiel confessed what happened, much to Lucifer's amusement. Amenadiel asked Lucifer for his help, trying to play into his ego by calling him crafty and smart. Amenadiel also believed he knew Humanity better then him, and while Lucifer was enjoying teasing him, he nonetheless agreed to help, so long as he followed his lead; Amenadiel agreed.

Amenadiel was taken to an outdoor Beachfront Bar, and asked if this was where thieves came to spend their spoils on wine and women, but Lucifer didn't give him a straight answer. Noticing Lucifer plying at a piano, he asked if Hell had music, to which he said only to torture, particularly from Justin Beiber. When Lucifer asked Amenadiel to go get them drinks while he did some reconnaissance, he glared at him suspiciously, but adhered all the same.

Hearing a different tune from the piano, Amenadiel realized that Lucifer was not only playing it, but was stalling his return to Hell. He confronted his brother, who didn't deny it. He reminded him that he promised to help him, but Lucifer clarified that he planned to help him distract himself from realizing that was never going to find the necklace.

While Lucifer continued to play, Amenadiel spotted a T.V. behind a bar that had the jogger who greeted him, Aiden Schott, as a murder victim who was shot at Cahuenga and Franklin; the place where he was shot by the hooded man. He took Lucifer over to the T.V. an told him that if they find Aiden's killer, they'll be able to find his necklace.

Amenadiel makes a deal with Lucifer

His hopes were crushed, however, when the reporter said that the LAPD had no leads, and if they couldn't find him, it would be impossible for them. Lucifer, however, believed he could help after all, but requested a few extra hours on Earth. Reluctant, Amenadiel asked his price, but Lucifer couldn't think of anything at the moment and insist it be a "blank check" deal. Amenadiel agreed to the deal, much to Lucifer's joy.

They went to a parking garage to get a set of wheels, and Amenadiel suggested one, but Lucifer deemed it to "douchey". Lucifer was about to choose an enormous Dodge Ram pickup truck, but changed his mind since he thought it was “too hick”. Then, Lucifer spotted a corvette and chose that as their transportation. Amenadiel questioned if he needed the keys, but Lucifer was able to "turn anything on". Amenadiel got into the passenger seat and the two drove off.[3]

In "Pilot", Amenadiel comes to Lux and asks Lucifer to return to the underworld and resume his role as the ruler of Hell. However, Lucifer steadfastly rejects his brother's request, and Amenadiel reluctantly leaves; but not before attempting to sway Malcolm Graham into a plan to kill Lucifer in order to banish him to Hell for all eternity.

In "Manly Whatnots" and "Sweet Kicks", Amenadiel persuades Mazikeen to help him return Lucifer to Hell for "his own good". Mazikeen agrees with Amenadiel's plan in the beginning, but soon after she attempts to kill him in his sleep, which resulted in them dissolving their unholy partnership.

217 2942 flaming sword key

Amenadiel was revealed to be God's true favorite son, shown by his necklace

In "Sympathy for the Goddess", an ancient Sumerian text claims that the key for the Flaming Sword was given to God's favorite son. Amenadiel initially was upset by this as he thought that Lucifer was the one who was bequeathed the ancient key. Much to his surprise and candor, the key is eventually revealed to be his own necklace, fortifying his belief that he is indeed God's favorite son. Lucifer did not doubt this for a second; he always knew that Amenadiel was their father's favorite.

In "Quintessential Deckerstar", Amenadiel deeply thanked Charlotte for her help in successfully preventing Chloe and Pierce from getting married, but her comment about still feeling the weight of her guilt made Amenadiel wonder if angels were also their judges, also known as self-actualization. Amenadiel can be credited with actually conceiving the theory of self-actualization. Later that night, Amenadiel comes across Mazikeen, who appears to be in distress for driving everyone away. While Maze had originally conspired with Pierce to tranquilize Amenadiel and take him to be killed, Maze changed her mind after the two of them shared a passionate moment. Later, after Charlotte helped to put away a killer, Amenadiel congratulated her for her deeds.

After Amenadiel and Charlotte gathered significant evidence from Richards & Wheeler, Charlotte's former law firm, that Marcus Pierce is indeed The Sinnerman, the duo set out to bring him to justice. While the two were talking on a bench, Pierce was hiding in the bushes, planning to take Amenadiel's life in order to remove his mark and in addition, his curse of immortality. Charlotte hears rattling coming from the trees, and in a moment of true redemption, stands in front of Amenadiel, taking two gunshots to her torso, thus saving his life, but consequently sealing her own fate.

323 the angel Amenadiel

Amenadiel would regain his wings after anguish at Charlotte's death

For the first time in the entire series, Amenadiel shows his emotional side. As Charlotte lays dying, he comforts her; she is in deep fear of returning to Hell. As he cradles her body, Amenadiel regains his wings and flies to Heaven with Charlotte's soul. Lucifer and Chloe find Charlotte's body and Lucifer realizes his brother has gone home to the Silver City and has taken Charlotte with him.

Return to the Silver City[]

Once Amenadiel brought Charlotte to Heaven, he was reunited with the inhabitants there. He couldn't stop talking about his realization that they're all free to make their own choices, which worried Remiel.[6] He, however, became concerned when he discovered that Michael took his place at their Father's side and insured no one in the city could speak with him.[8] He also came across Chloe's father, who relayed to him how proud he was of her.[16] During his time back in Heaven, he felt off, believing it had no longer felt like home to him.[17]

Making Earth his Home[]

Choosing to Stay[]

Amenadiel returns to Earth

A month after returning to the Silver City, Amenadiel finally returned to Earth. His first stop being Lucifer to make sure he knew that Angels did decide their fate. He descended on the penthouse's balcony, wearing his original angelic robes. After retracting his wings, he was met with Lucifer's approval to gloat over being right about his theory of self-actualization, to which he happily did.

Amenadiel was handed a glass of liquor and the two toasted to Charlotte making it to Heaven. Their remembrance of their friend over, Amenadiel became confused when Lucifer commented on going to miss him. His brother clarified that with his wings back, he can now return to Heaven for good, which Amenadiel had forgotten was his original goal in getting his divinity back.

Lucifer questioned why he returned at all, asking if the Silver City had changed since he was last there. Amenadiel confirmed it was the same, though he was uncertain if that made him happy or not. Amenadiel's undetermined opinion of Heaven was quickly pushed aside when Lucifer revealed that Chloe had finally discovered the truth about Celestial existence and him being the Devil.

Knowing how important Chloe was to Lucifer, Amenadiel asked if he needed his help in easing her into her new reality. Lucifer, however, claimed she was fine with it all. Though Amenadiel continued to offer his support if he needed it, but Lucifer assured him it was okay for him to return home, where he wanted to be.

Amenadiel was still unsure of his feelings, so he decided to seek Linda's advice. He arrived at her office the next day, where he was surprised to witness Linda punching Maze in the face. Glad he was here to stop their petty fight over his affections, Amenadiel was quickly humbled after learning that the two made up soon after he returned to the Silver City with Charlotte.

Still wanting an excuse to avoid his feelings, he asked if there was anything they needed help with, but was disappointed when they didn't. Now having nothing to distract him, Amenadiel sat on Linda's coach and let his uncertain feelings of why Heaven felt so different despite it being exactly the same become known. Maze then sat next to him and gave him the answer; Earth was his home now. Amenadiel realized she was right.

With Dan being the most Human person he knew, Amenadiel decided to get his advice on why he made Los Angeles his home. He teleported in the conference room of the precinct while the Detective was looking and made himself known; the act startled Dan. He was questioned where he'd been the last month, and after answering that he went home and there were no cell phones there, he, in turn, asked why Dan chose to make L.A. his home over everywhere else.

With Dan's answer of meeting people that he cared about pleasing him, Amenadiel finally accepted that Earth has become more home to him then Heaven and decided to stay. Though Dan was happy for him, Amenadiel could see that he was still grieving Charlotte. He assured him that she was in Heaven, but the Detective angrily told him not to give him false claims. Refusing to let his friend go on like this, he placed his palm on Dan's chest and told him to trust him when he says that Charlotte is in Heaven. Breaking down, Dan hugs Amenadiel, and says he does.[17]

Giving Relationship Advice[]

With Earth now his home, Amenadiel visited Lucifer the next morning. When he arrived at his penthouse, he gave his confused, shirtless, brother the news and his began to give his reasonings before Lucifer quickly cut him off, not interested. However, he asked Amenadiel his advice on which shirt to wear, and after Amenadiel chose one, Lucifer picked the opposite.

Knowing something was wrong since his younger brother never questioned his choice of style, he asked what was troubling him. Though Lucifer tried to shrug his question off, Amenadiel pieced it together that this newfound desire to look good was because of Chloe and asked if everything was okay between the two.

Lucifer assured that everything was fine, but also revealed that they kissed just before Charlotte died, causing Amenadiel to chuckle in happiness. His brother, however, was questioning the Detective's desires now that she knew the truth, so Amenadiel decided he needed his council. He told him not to repeat his own mistakes of keeping Humans or Chloe at arms length, noting how lucky they are to interact with them, and just ask her out on a date.[18]

Questioning His Purpose[]

Once Lucifer was taken care of, Amenadiel decided to spend time with Dan and got two tickets for improv night at The Groundlings. He went to the precinct to show the tickets to his friend, but was saddened to learn that he wasn't interested in improv anymore. Amenadiel suggested some other "male bonding-type" experience, but Dan was too busy to hang out.

With Dan busy, Amenadiel opted to spend time meeting the people of Los Angeles. He headed to a park where he spotted a group of kids playing soccer. When the ball rolled over to him, he tried to be friendly and kick the ball back to them, only for it soar over them to a building. Embarrassed, Amenadiel headed to a café to get a cupcake. He noticed a woman typing on a computer and questioned what she was writing, in a very creepy way, causing her to quickly flee. He then decided to walk the streets, when he came across a homeless woman and, in a act of charity, give some money. Unfortunately, the woman tricked him and stole his wallet while he wasn't looking and ran off.

Amenadiel questions if he made the right decision.

This being the last straw, Amenadiel sat at a park bench next to an elderly Espanic man and vented his feelings. He talked about how he was starting to question if he made the right decision to stay. He says that he's always had a task or purpose, but now was starting to wonder who he was supposed to be if he didn't have that. The elderly man started speaking in Spanish, confused as to what Amenadiel was saying. In response, Amenadiel only raised his eyebrow.[18]

An Unexpected Miracle[]

Amenadiel happily discovers he's going to be a father.

The next night, Amenadiel sat alone at Lux, swirling his drink, continuing to ponder if he made the right choice. A woman then approached him and started flirting with him. This act just made Amenadiel become even more annoyed by his decision when Linda arrived telling him she was pregnant with his child, causing the woman to move away. Amenadiel was speechless by this development since it was impossible for a Celestial to impregnate a Human. After the initial shock, the new father-to-be walked over to Linda and placed his hand on her shoulder, overjoyed that he had a new purpose in life; fatherhood.[18]

Making the World a Better Place[]

After Lucifer returned to Hell to keep the Demons in line, Amenadiel took over as manager of Lux, while also sharing custody of Charlie with Linda. Amenadiel, wanting to make the world safer for Charlie, "plays vigilante," attempting citizen's arrests on jaywalkers and littering. Unfortunately, he overdoes it, calling in the police on a three year old. He then, instead, decided to sniff out illegal activity at Lux to take down crime through them.

One night, Amenadiel was observing the club from the balcony, only to notice Chloe and Maze dancing again. He greets the duo and was embraced by Chloe. The two started discussing Amenadiel's management of the club before he noticed two men in a corner, one handing money to a teen. Believing he's finally nailed a drug dealer he bid farewell to the two and went to intercept the teen who received the money.

He questioned if he witnessed a drug deal take place, but the teen denied it. He then shoved the teen against a wall when he attempted to leave the club and told him that if he was going to continue to sell drugs at Lux, he was going to embrace the new managemeent and give him a cut of the profits from now on. When the teen agreed to Amenadiel's terms, the Archangel club owner allowed him to leave.

The following day, Amenadiel went to the precinct to request Dan's aide in taking down the drug dealer. When he arrived, he was met with a horrible stench, which belonged to Dan using essential oils on himself. He declined Dan's offer for some of his oils, but was impressed by him embracing the self-help improvement.

After listening to Dan's methods to heal from Charlotte's death, Amenadiel told him he wanted to report his drug dealer. Dan, however, wasn't interested in Amenadiel's crime reports after the three year old incitant. Amenadiel assured his friend that this was different, telling him about gaining the trust of a drug dealer at Lux. Unfortunately, Dan insisted Amenadiel stop.

Amenadiel continued to beg Dan to let him help, as he wanted to make the world better, after initially going about it the wrong way. He used one of Dan's self-help signs to reinforce his case, causing Dan to reluctantly decide to take on Amenadiel's drug dealer case.

Getting the support of the LAPD, Amenadiel set up a meet with Kyle the next night. Wearing a wire, Amenadiel and Kyle discussed their new arrangement. Kyle, however, was more accustomed to how Lucifer ran Lux, but Amenadiel suggested Kyle evolve his ways. He told the dealer that he'd be taking 20% of Kyle's profits. Kyle agreed and attempted to leave, but Amenadiel required a look at the drugs he'd be selling.

This left Amenadiel and the LAPD embarrassed.

After the failed bust, Amenadiel and Dan struck up a conversation in the now empty Lux. Amenadiel claims he just want the world safer for his son. Dan explains to Amenadiel how when it comes to being a parent, you try your hardest to make the world better, only to realize it was next to impossible, using his experience when Trixie was first born as an example. He was told by Dan to just be there for Charlie to protect him. Taking Dan's advice, Amenadiel visited Charlie at Linda's and spent time with them.[19]

Letting Fear Take Hold[]

Amenadiel reunites with "Lucifer."

The following night, Amenadiel chatted with two women at Lux, before he was greeted by Lucifer. Initially shrugging off Lucifer's greeting, Amenadiel quickly realized his younger brother was back and walked over to see him. Though happy to see Lucifer, he quickly remembered that he was supposed to be watching the Demons and questioned why he wasn't in Hell doing just that. With a vague answer, Lucifer attempted to leave, but Amenadiel needed more information.

He questioned who was watching Hell in his place and became worried when Lucifer revealed no one was. Amenadiel noted how glib Lucifer was being in light of the danger it meant for Charlie, but his brother assured him that he wouldn't have returned to Earth if he didn't believe that it was safe to and walked away. Amenadiel was still left fearful of Charlie's safety.

Amenadiel carefully watching Charlie

Amenadiel carefully watching Charlie.

When it was his turn to watch Charlie, Amenadiel let his fears take hold of Charlie being kidnapped by the Demons again and strapped his son in a baby pack for 15-16 hours to keep him safe. When it reached noon, Linda came to relieve him. He greeted her, but requested that Charlie stay with him for one more night as he gave two customers they're drinks.

Linda was confused since he was working, but Amenadiel argued that Charlie would be safest with him, strapped to his chest. When Linda tried to take Charlie from him, Amenadiel refused. Seeing she was becoming concerned, he finally told her that Lucifer had returned from Hell, though she revealed she already knew and didn't understand why that was making him paranoid.

Amenadiel reminded her that he wasn't watching the Demons of Hell, only for Linda to repeat the same reasoning that Lucifer gave him regarding his return. Amenadiel started to calm down, remembering Lucifer doesn't lie, only to discover that since his return he has started lying. Becoming concerned again, Linda stated they shouldn't let their fears control them. This gave Amenadiel the clarity to realize it wasn't Lucifer, but Michael, using fear to get inside his head.

Amenadiel confronts Michael

Amenadiel confronts Michael.

Now knowing Michael was on Earth, he confronted his younger brother at Lux that night. Though Michael tried to continue his Sharad, Amenadiel called him out. Michael sarcastically congratulated him for figuring him out compared to back when they were in Heaven, but Amenadiel accused him of his fear manipulations that revealed his identity. He asked if their Father knew he was down on Earth, but Michael huffed, and told him that he can do what he wants.

When Amenadiel insisted Michael return to the Silver City, Michael threatened to have Remiel return to bring Charlie to Heaven since he didn't belong down on Earth either. Amenadiel, however, refused to buy into Michael's fear tactics again and demanded he go home now. Michael finally relented, insulting Lucifer's Earth life as he did, only for Amenadiel to call him out on his protests.

He accused Michael of knowing everyone's fears, but everyone knew his; that Lucifer would always be better than him. When Michael denied these fears, listing all of Lucifer's shortcomings, Amenadiel still insisted that despite their fallen brother's faults, he would always win against Michael, which terrified him. With Michael refusing to let it happen again, Amenadiel became concerned once the Archangel disappeared behind a crowd of people.[9]

Temporarily Relieving Lucifer[]

Amenadiel comes to bring Lucifer back

Amenadiel comes to bring Lucifer back.

Realizing that Michael was a threat to Charlie, Amenadiel went down to Hell to get Lucifer to deal with their brother. He came across Lucifer walking the corridors, and though the latter was happy to see his eldest brother after all this time in Hell, he questioned why he was paying him a visit. All Amenadiel said was that it was time for Lucifer to return, greatly worrying him.[9]

Taking the conversation into one of the prisoner's hell loops of a circus, Amenadiel informed Lucifer of Michael's schemes. Though frustrated with his "dickhead twin," Lucifer didn't feel like their was anything he could do since he needed to keep Hell in line. Uncomfortable with their conversation being in a prisoner's hell loop, Amenadiel requested they talk somewhere else, but Lucifer declined.

Amenadiel reveals Michael's newfound power.

Seeing that Lucifer wasn't taking the threat of Michael seriously, Amenadiel told him that he's threatened Charlie. However, Lucifer didn't believe it, reminding him of how Michael was growing up and how he would always fall back in line when Amenadiel taught him a lesson. Amenadiel, in contrast to Lucifer's opinion of their brother, revealed that when he visited Heaven the last time Michael had taken his place as God's right-hand and orchestrated things to having him be the only one who can speak with Him.

Amenadiel temporarily rules Hell

Amenadiel temporarily rules Hell.

Amenadiel emphasized Michael's power in the Silver City, which finally gave Lucifer the motivations to deal with him. As he was leaving, Lucifer asked Amenadiel to "hold the fort" while he was gone and left him in the hell loop. Before Amenadiel could digest the request, Lucifer was gone, leaving Amenadiel once again to keep order in Hell. Two Demons in the forms of clowns walked up to him and questioned if they should return to torturing, to which Amenadiel confirmed.[8]

Detective Amenadiel[]

Relieved of Duty[]

While Amenadiel was wandering the Underworld's corridors, he heard the vice of the one person he'd never imagine hearing in Hell; God. The only thing he was told by his Father that Hell no longer required a warden. In response, Amenadiel returned to Earth to spend time with Charlie for a few hours at Linda's house before giving Lucifer the news.

Amenadiel returns from Hell

As Amenadiel was joyfully cradling his son, he walked in on Lucifer talking with Linda about relieving him of watching Hell in the living room. He attempted to sneak out, only for Lucifer to catch him in the act. Amenadiel awkwardly greeted his bewildered brother while patting Charlie's back, before Linda took their son from him to give the two brothers the room to talk.

Amenadiel gives Lucifer God's message

Amenadiel gives Lucifer God's message.

Amenadiel sat at the table while Lucifer got them drinks and explained how God gave him the message regarding Hell's no longer need of a warden. This greatly frustrated Lucifer due to just spending millennia down there compared to Amenadiel's couple day "sleepover." Amenadiel tried to give Lucifer reassurance regarding their Father, but he was in no mood to hear it.

Changing the subject, Amenadiel asked how Chloe was doing, but was saddened to learn that Michael had revealed the divine circumstances regarding her birth. He quickly asked if she was aware that he was the one who blessed her mother in the first place, allowing her birth, but Lucifer informed him that she was still unaware of that detail.[20]

Helping Chloe through Her Issues[]

Amenadiel returns to the LAPD and begins helping out on a murder investigation for a second time, helping Chloe solve the murder of a nun; this helps bring him closer to his Father and restores his faith in what he had previously lost. He also realizes that angels share the common ability to reflect a human’s traits back at them, Lucifer reflecting people’s desires and himself reflecting God’s love back at the nuns. Because Chloe doesn’t see her desires reflected back to her when she sees Lucifer, he helps her realize that Chloe’s the only mortal who sees him for who he truly is, proving that everything they shared was as real as it gets and that Chloe herself wasn’t a gift, but her sight is the only true gift at present, and hers alone rather than Lucifer’s. With these new developments, Amenadiel also realizes that Lucifer is vulnerable around Chloe because he chooses to be, not for any other reason. Thus, her relationship with Lucifer is restored.[20]

Struggling Father[]

Amenadiel quickly realizes that he now relies too heavily on his duty as a parent, and remarks to Maze that he is no longer sure of who he was before he became a father. Maze promises to show Amenadiel what he is missing, but this quickly goes wrong when the two kiss; it becomes clear that Maze too is missing who she used to be. Amenadiel later talks with Linda about these concerns and the fact that Charlie will no longer need the two of them someday.

The Loyal Son[]

Return to Norm[]

Amenadiel by his Father's side

Amenadiel by his Father's side.

Amenadiel and Linda took God back to the latter's house, where Amenadiel stood guard as he watched his Father cradle His grandson. Once Linda went to get something for God to drink, Amenadiel approached to reaffirm Lucifer's allocations against Michael, but God wasn't concerned. Amenadiel took this opportunity to ask his Father if Charlie was mortal, but He cut him off before he could finish asking the question, deciding the Celestial family needed a family dinner to work out their issues.

While God prepared the dinner, He sent Amenadiel to persuade Lucifer come. He arrived at the precinct the next day to see his brother playing a indoor putting ring in relation to the case he and Chloe were investigating. He stopped Lucifer's game to try and convince him to come to their Father's family dinner, using the idea of finally getting answers from Him as a motivation.

Amenadiel tries to convince Lucifer to come to dinner

Lucifer, however, had no interest in entertaining their absente Father and returned to his game. Amenadiel once again stopped the game and asked Lucifer to be there as a gesture of good will that they should consider. In response to his request, Amenadiel was accused of becoming God's "dutiful lackey" once again after all the work he did to become his own man. Amenadiel rebutted Lucifer's insult by pointing out how he also reverted to being a "spoiled child stomping off to pout" in their Father's presence.

Trying one last attempt to get Lucifer to change his mind, he admitted that God has been a "real ass" to them in the past, but regardless, He was still their Father and deserved to be heard. Unfortunately, this did little to change Lucifer's mind, so Amenadiel returned to Linda's to help prepare for the dinner without him.[21]

Accepting the New God[]

As the battle waged on, Amenadiel used his wings to knock two charging Angels to the ground. Unfortunately, it became clear that they were outnumbered, as he and his allies became surrounded by Michael's forces. The brawl was halted by the sudden resurrection of both Chloe and Lucifer. Amenadiel and the others walked to the top of the arched entrance of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to see the conclusion of the battle between Lucifer and Michael.

Amenadiel feared Lucifer was going to eradicate their brother with the Flaming Sword, but was relieved when he instead severed his wings to give him a second chance. Believing that Lucifer had succeeded in taking their Father's place as ruler of the Universe, Amenadiel was the first to kneel before Lucifer, causing the others to follow suit. As Lucifer shakenly held the sword up in victory, Amenadiel smiled at his younger brother at how far he'd had come since his rebellion.[22]

Personality[]

Amenadiel wings S5

Amenadiel gains great faith in making the right choices after regaining his immortality

Amenadiel is very head-strong, loyal, determined, disciplined, honorable, and righteous. Lucifer once described him as a "major power-hungry dick", though he admitted that he and their other siblings all looked up to Amenadiel. He is extremely loyal to his Father, God, and has shown great determination to complete whatever task he believes God wants him to do.

While not initially evident, it becomes clear that Amenadiel is jealous of Lucifer’s place as God’s ‘favorite’ son (Samael, which is translated as ‘God’s favorite’). He is thrilled when, having read in an untitled ancient tome that the key to Azrael’s blade, the missing third piece was given to God’s favorite son, and assuming that the piece was in Lucifer’s possession, he realizes that it was given to him - in the form of a necklace he always wears.

Like his brother Lucifer, Amenadiel is physically handsome, well built, and has a powerful physique. Amenadiel initially shows disdain towards Hell and Earth. He rejects becoming the sovereign of Hell nor does he want to live on Earth. He looks down at humans and once called humans who were with Lucifer "poor creatures" who "know not what they do." However, after living on Earth he begins to understand humans more and even falls in love with one.

While generally trying to do "good", Amenadiel has at times deviated. While trying to force Lucifer to go back to Hell, he lied to and manipulated Dr. Linda Martin. He also resurrected Malcolm Graham from Hell for Malcolm to kill Lucifer. Goddess noted Amenadiel sacrifices a lot to be the "good son" but is never rewarded for all he does. However, despite blaming Lucifer for refusing to listen, Amenadiel is not without remorse; when he befriended Linda to manipulate Lucifer, he truly thought of her as a friend. When he realized his action had led to people being hurt, he felt guilty and sought to make things right.

When Amenadiel fell from grace, he started to become weary of God's choices. He believes God is testing him but he is confused about what he should do. In season 3, he had concluded that Lucifer is his test, that God wants him to be there for Lucifer and be his "brother's keeper."

Amenadiel hides the fact he still cares deeply about Lucifer, but still acts in his best interest. When he saw Lucifer was on the verge of crying after using his emotional pain to ignite the Flaming Sword, he stopped Goddess from forcing him to keep trying when it failed to stay lit. Of all the Angels, Amenadiel was the first to back Lucifer to replace their Father and was the first to kneel before him when it looked as if he would become God, proud at how far his little brother has come.

When discussing names for their child with Linda, most of the names Amenadiel suggested ended in "el", which is an abbreviation of ‘Elohim’ one of the traditional Hebrew names for God - all names which end in ‘el’ connotative of a relationship with God (e.g. Castiel, Samael, Michael, Gabriel, Ezekiel). He also showed a deep aversion to the name Michael, thereby indicating that the two have a strained relationship. Despite this, Amenadiel's love for his family outweighed any grudges he had with his younger brother, as he was relieved Lucifer chose to spare him in the final battle to decide who will be God.

During his eulogy at Dan's funeral in "Is This Really How It's Going To End?!", Amenadiel admitted that when he first came to Los Angeles, he was angry and confused about his place in the world; he had always just done what God wished, never really thinking for himself. After he fell and became mortal, he had no idea how to interact with humans; however, Dan helped him learn how. It was this friendship that helped him learn how to be a good man and how to be a good father to Charlie. Because of such, Amenadiel chose to follow Dan's choice of profession of being a police officer; both because it was righteous and to help others (by fighting the racism within the system)

Angel Powers[]

323 the angel Amenadiel

Amenadiel regains his angelic wings

  • Archangel Physiology: As the oldest and one of the most powerful angels, Amenadiel is extremely powerful and has their powers, as well as their weaknesses. He proved to be capable of overpowering the likes of Remiel and Michael. Lucifer is said to be the only angel seen to rival his power, but even he could not defeat Amenadiel without effort. Amenadiel has shown on multiple occasions to overpower Lucifer and attack him with enough force to make him severely bleed. Furthermore, when Amenadiel was weakened and his wings are damaged, he was still much stronger than ordinary human, as shown when he easily held off several hospital security guards, lifting a man off of the ground by his throat one-handed with minimal effort, and effortlessly overpowering and easily defeating Cain in hand-to-hand combat. After Charlotte Richards sacrificed her life to save Amenadiel, his powers were restored and he was able to fly with her soul to Heaven.
    • Superhuman Strength: Amenadiel, like all angels, is incredibly strong, capable of exerting immense amounts of superhuman physical force and has vast levels of superhuman strength when he so desires, the full extent of which remains unknown but said to be among the strongest of God's angels. While holding back, he could trade blows equally with Remiel, another extremely powerful angel, known as the Huntress of Heaven. However, once he revealed his true power, he overpowered her and easily bested her with a single punch. He also maintained the upper hand through most of his fight with Michael, as the latter struggled to hold many of Amenadiel's powerful strikes back. Amenadiel has shown to have the strength to effortlessly overpower multiple large men in combat. In addition, he can knock a man unconscious with just a light jab, send a heavy punching bag nearly several feet in the air, and bend and break metal objects such as guns. Even without his powers, Amenadiel still maintained a high degree of superhuman physical force, albeit nowhere near as strong as he was before.
    • Superhuman Speed: Like all angels, Amenadiel is extraordinarily fast, he is much faster than humans, demons, animals, and other beings, he can appear and disappear with a blink of an eye, and when using his wings he can fly as fast or faster than the speed of light, he can appear and disappear, in a similar manner akin to teleportation. It is unknown how fast he is while running, but he has shown to be able to move superhumanly fast.
    • Immortality: Being the firstborn Angel, Amenadiel has been alive for billions of years, predating the Big Bang and all of his angelic siblings. Like all angels, he is absolutely immortal with an eternal youthful lifespan, and he will live for all eternity without aging or decaying.
    • Regenerative Healing Factor: Like all angels, Amenadiel can heal any injury or wound within minutes or an hour, no matter how bad the injury is. However, Amenadiel is virtually indestructible, and the only time he would need to heal is if he physically fought his angelic siblings or if he was hurt by the demon daggers or the Flaming Sword.
    • Invulnerability: Like all Angels, Amenadiel is virtually indestructible and nearly invincible. He has an incredibly durable body, which can withstand a vast amount of physical damage. Bullets and knives harmlessly bounce off of his body. The only things and beings that can harm him are God, Goddess, the Flaming Sword and Demon Daggers forged in Hell.
    • Superhuman Agility and Reflexes: Like all Angels, Amenadiel has vast superhuman agility and reflexes, far greater agility than humans and demons.
    • Flight: Amenadiel's wings allow him to fly, including between Earth and Heaven. He can fly as fast or faster than the speed of light in which he would seemingly disappear from the human eye, in a similar manner, akin to teleportation.
      • Dimensional Travel: When Amenadiel possessed his wings, he was able to travel between Heaven, Hell, and Earth. He lost this ability when his wings were damaged and his powers weakened. Upon regaining his wings, Amenadiel regained the ability to travel back to Heaven. His first act upon regaining his wings was to travel to Heaven with Charlotte's soul so that she can finally be at blissful peace in the afterlife she deserved.
      • Healing: Amenadiel is capable of channeling divine power to heal the injuries of other beings. When resurrecting Malcolm Graham, he instantly healed the gunshot wound that originally killed him.
      • Resurrection: Amenadiel, like all angels, can bring people back from the dead. When a dying Malcolm was taken off life support, Amenadiel brought him back to life. He does this by taking a soul and placing it in a recently deceased body. Without his wings as a fallen angel, Amenadiel would be unable to travel to Heaven or Hell to retrieve a soul. This power was presumably restored when his powers returned, as he took Charlotte Richards to Heaven.
    • Chronokinesis: Amenadiel's greatest power is his unique ability to significantly slow down time. However, after committing several sins he started deeming himself unworthy of his powers, and he began to lose them, with his chronokinetic ability being the first one to fail. In "The Good, the Bad and the Crispy", Amenadiel was able to considerably slow time to allow Maze to save Linda. However, this took intense concentration and left him exhausted afterward. In "They're Back, Aren't They?", Amenadiel tells Lucifer that this appears to have been "a one-time thing" as he has since been unable to replicate the effect or use any of his other powers. This power was revealed to not have been restored with his full angelic form after meeting Remiel, possibly because of his newfound beliefs of connecting with humanity and his views of his powers. During a great moment of anguish, he succeeded in completely stopping time.
    • Cursing: Amenadiel was sent by God to curse Cain with a mark on his arm that allows him to Live forever.
    • Celestial Communication: Amenadiel, like all angels, can communicate with his Angelic siblings by praying to them, and he can also communicate with his father God if he chooses to do so.
    • Spirit Communication: As an angel, Amenadiel can communicate with ghosts, like he did with Dan Espinoza after his soul was placed on Earth from Hell.
    • Faith Reflection: When around people of faith, they will see their love of God reflected back at them when looking at Amenadiel, as he is a channel for God’s love. This led him to realize that Lucifer’s ability to seduce people was because they saw their own desires reflected back by him, and thus, that Chloe’s immunity to Lucifer’s desire mojo was because her reactions were hers alone, not a mirrored or augmented angelic influence. This is exhibited when he and Chloe are investigating nuns.
    • Reality Manipulation: Like all angels Amenadiel could grant prayers and has no limitations to what he can achieve.
    • Miracle blessing: Amenadiel gave John and Penelope a Miracle (Chloe)

God Powers[]

  • Nigh-Omnipotence: As Amenadiel became the new God, it is safe to assume that he has aquired all of the same powers as his father. In addition, Amenadiel possess absolute control over Heaven and the angels, as he was able to command for democracy in Heaven.
  • Nigh-Omniscience: As a god, Amenadiel presumably possesses nearly unlimited knowledge.

In addition to his omnipotence, Amenadiel retains all of his powers while being an angel.

Abilities[]

Yes, Amenadiel is quite the warrior. Undefeated in battle, one of God's finest.
Lucifer in City of Angels?
  • Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant/Martial Artist: Amenadiel is a supreme hand-to-hand combatant, one of the greatest fighters to date. He is shown on multiple occasions of being able to swiftly gain the upper hand against the demon Maze in a duel, even mocking her at times. Even without his powers, Amenadiel showed exceptional strength and experience in combat, mostly exhibited during his duel with Cain. He was able to hold his own and overpower the latter, who, while human, has been alive for thousands of years and is also a highly skilled combatant. He is even shown to be quite capable of competing with Lucifer and even overpowering him twice when Lucifer was holding back, although Lucifer is proven to be more skilled than him when he was fighting fully, as despite being able to fight against him on reasonably even footing, Lucifer dealt a more severe beating on him in their third altercation while not at full power.

Weaknesses[]

As an angel, Amenadiel has his weaknesses including the Flaming Sword, Demon Daggers Forged In Hell, God, and Goddess.

  • Self-Actualisation: Angels are under the same system of self-judgment as humans are. Similar to how humans are judged to determine if they are to go to Hell, if an angel feels a sufficient amount of guilt, it could cause them to see themselves as sinners and punish themselves. Due to Amenadiel's guilt and feelings of unworthiness, Amenadiel believed he was truly guilty, which resulted in his fall from grace. His personal belief in the importance of connecting with humans on Earth and the role his powers over time had on them had caused him to lose his ability to manipulate time even after his angelic form was restored. It is implied by a conversation with Remiel that his time manipulation power has not returned because he believes he shouldn't use it. When consumed by the fear of his son growing old and dying before him, Amenadiel's subconscious state caused his chronokinesis to go out of control and surpass what he was previously able to do before he lost his power which was limited to only slowing time down initially.

Trivia[]

  • While Chloe was immune to Lucifer's charm, she was affected by Amenadiel's presence. Ella Lopez reacts similarly to Amenadiel, but she is not fully immune to Lucifer's charm.
  • Amenadiel was the one who started the association of Lucifer to the figure of a goat, which Lucifer abhors. He spread the rumor a thousand years ago as a prank on Lucifer. Maze was the first person he told about it.
  • In the comics, Amenadiel is a supporting antagonist. He is a strong angel who despises Lucifer and is bent on killing him. His personality and role in the show is much like that of Michael's comic counterpart.
  • It is said in "Sympathy for the Goddess", that he is God's favorite angel.
  • A Devil of My Word is the only season finale in which Amenadiel doesn't appear.
  • Amenadiel spent the entirety of season 3 trying understand why God wanted him to be with Lucifer on Earth; with the subtle revelation being to nurture true empathy for humans and learn what it meant to be a father, all of which was needed to be God's successor.
  • After three years on Earth, Amenadiel came to view God as having been "a real ass" to his children throughout existence for being vague and never giving straight answers for anything.
  • He has had relationships with both Maze and Linda, two of his brother's former lovers.
  • The meaning of the name Amenadiel is "Amen" and '"di el," it is of God.
  • There is an Amendiel in the book of Enoch, which is part of the Bible of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. It is said that Amenadiel is a fallen angel who rebelled against the Creator and was defeated by angel Michael.
