"Somebody's Been Reading Dante's Inferno" is the second episode of the fourth season of Lucifer.
Summary[]
Chloe and Lucifer look into a murder on the set of a reality show. Father Kinley presses forward with a plan. Amenadiel reconsiders his idea of home.
Plot[]
During Chloe's sabbatical, a flashback shows that while in Rome, she did some research on the Devil at the Vatican, and the records frightened her. It was there she was approached by the priest, William Kinley. He is aware that Lucifer is the Devil. He tells Chloe Lucifer's very presence on Earth is corrupting, and shows her his own biased research. He impresses upon her that as long as Lucifer walks the Earth, death and destruction will follow him. Chloe has a hard time believing him. The Lucifer she knows is nothing like the Devil described in the research, and she says all Kinley's evidence is circumstantial. Kinley tells her Lucifer isn’t supposed to be on Earth and insists that only Chloe can send the Devil back to Hell.
Back in LA, Chloe and Ella are talking about Ella’s new hobby. Ella is having a crisis of faith and she has stopped going to church. Trying to fill the void in her life, she has decided to raise a chicken in her bathroom.
Amenadiel arrives at the penthouse to tell his brother that he is staying in LA. Lucifer is too anxious to care; he is confused by Chloe and how she is handling the truth about him. He confesses that he kissed Chloe before he was outed as the Devil, but he doesn’t know exactly where they stand now, or if 'the moment' they shared is something to be ignored. Amenadiel is amused and tells Lucifer to ask Chloe on a date.
Lucifer and Chloe next respond to a murder which has occurred on the set of a reality TV show, The Cabin. The victim is Melinda Hagey, a school teacher and fan favorite on the show. Ella points out signs of struggle, and a large contusion on the back of her head.
Chloe and Lucifer meet the show’s executive producer, Maury Novak. He says the cameras are turned off when the guests are sleeping so there is no footage of the murder. Chloe orders production shut down while they are investigating, and Ella asks for all of the un-aired footage.
Something called the Teflon Totem was found in Melinda’s pocket, but she is not the contestant who found it. Another contestant, Judd, found it first. Chloe and Lucifer suggest he got angry and killed her. But Judd is actually not that guy, he did the research and discovered the winner was usually the villain, so is playing the part. He also has an alibi that checks out. He warns them that no one in The Cabin is who they seem. After talking to Judd, Lucifer tries to get confirmation for their date, but Chloe is in deep thought about the case.
At the precinct, Dan is still brooding over Charlotte and still blames Lucifer for her death. He moves his desk to under the stairs so he doesn’t have to interact with the Devil.
Maze and Linda are working out together at the penthouse, Maze says she doesn’t feel comfortable at Chloe’s place anymore. Linda tells her that Chloe needs time to adjust, she understands how scary it can be to find out the whole Celestial thing is real. She suggests Maze shouldn’t take anything Chloe does or says personally. Linda is bouncing around the penthouse, and wants to learn more moves from Maze. Linda then suddenly collapses, scaring Maze. Maze consults a Medieval physician's textbook in order to help her friend, and when Linda wakes from her faint, Maze tells her she scared the hell out of her and insists that Linda go see a doctor.
Chloe and Lucifer interview each of the contestants, and discover that Melinda was apparently hooking up with someone, but no one knows who. One contestant, Kylie, says she didn’t talk to Melinda much and thought her fake. Chloe concludes that Judd was right, no one is who they seem. She uses that to segue into a conversation about who Lucifer really is. Chloe says she did a lot of research on the Devil, and didn’t like what she found. She asks about Hell, the killing, torturing, did he enjoy it? Lucifer is visibly upset and tells her he has only ever killed on human…Pierce. And what he did in Hell...that was just his job; a job he was forced to take. Chloe comments that what she saw was nothing but stereotypes, then, but Lucifer is troubled.
At the precinct, Lucifer confides in Ella and shows her the dress he picked up for Chloe for a Pretty Woman-like date, planning to whisk her off to San Francisco for opera. Ella is thrilled, she seems far more excited than Chloe is. He confides Chloe is acting oddly, like she’s hiding something. Ella assures him it’s just nerves. Chloe watches Ella and Lucifer as they talk and laugh together. She looks at the vial of sedative and then pops in to ask if they can postpone the date until the case is done, a disappointed Lucifer agrees, and gives the tickets to Ella to use.
Chloe meets with Kinley to tell him she can't hurt Lucifer; the monster he describes is not the man she knows. He tells her Lucifer doesn’t belong on Earth…where he goes, death and destruction follow, and he can’t do this without her. Kinley senses that he losing Chloe and tells her that the Devil is manipulating her. He will do anything and be anyone to get what he wants. Chloe doesn’t want to believe that Lucifer ever lied to her.
Chloe sees Lucifer arrive at the station with donuts and greets everyone as he walks in. It’s obvious that everyone likes him. But they have a job to do so she turns her attention back to the case. Ella calls them in to discuss the contents of Melinda’s stomach. Ella found the ingredients for rum balls. The contestants were on a strict so where did she get the rum balls?
Lucifer and Chloe head to the set and tell Maury that Melinda had eaten rum balls within an hour of her death. Maury admits they were his and admits to giving Melinda the rum balls in exchange for a favor. Melinda was the fan favorite, so he devised a way for her to dramatically win the contest to boost the ratings, but she refused to play along. Lucifer doesn’t believe him and accuses Maury of having an affair with Melinda and killing her, he wants the case closed and the date to start. Chloe pulls Lucifer back and accuses him of only thinking about himself. Lucifer is taken aback by her accusation and leaves her to talk to Maury alone.
Maury then shows Chloe footage of Melinda and Kylie kissing in the shower despite the fact there were supposed to be no cameras in the bathrooms. Chloe wants to question Kylie again, so they search the monitors for cast locations, but Kylie isn’t there. Maury spots her breaking the gas line behind a cabin. She sets the cabin on fire just as Lucifer enters that same cabin. Chloe is horrified, terrified for the Devil's safety. When the cabin erupts into a ball of flame, Lucifer walks out without a scratch. Chloe rushes to his side, betraying her real feelings.
Chloe is astonished that he survived without a scratch, and he informs he that is just a perk from spending most of his life in a fiery pit of despair. Kylie rushes up , saying she was afraid she did it again. She comes clean about her relationship with Melinda. She was shocked that Melinda liked her and got jealous when she saw Melinda go into Maury’s. Even though she knew they weren’t hooking up, Kylie knew Melinda was hiding something from her. They fought, and Kylie pushed Melinda in the lagoon, Kylie left without checking on her. Kylie believes she killed Melinda.
Kylie is arrested and Lucifer is happy enough, but suspects that Chloe isn’t. He doesn’t want to pressure her into anything she doesn’t want to do, but Chloe insists on going through with their date and arranges to meet him at the penthouse.
When Chloe arrives at Lucifer’s, he pauses and calls her beautiful. He has tried to be more homey for her, and serves her a supper of grilled cheese sandwiches. He says he’s glad there are no more secrets between them, and he will answer any questions she has. He has always been honest with her and always will be. When he leaves the table to put on some music, Chloe pulls out the vial. The blast of music startles Chloe, and she knocks over his glass of wine without doctoring it. She is freaking out about the broken glass, and Lucifer tries to calm her, telling her it is fine, but he cuts his hand picking up the glass. Chloe is confused, then gets angry, and demands he explain why he can survive an explosion without a scratch one minute and bleed from a simple cut the next. She asks if he does that to make her feel bad, to make her care. Appalled she should think that, Lucifer says he is only vulnerable when he is close to her. She makes him vulnerable, but he doesn’t know why.
They are interrupted by a call from Ella. The autopsy report shows that Melinda died from a blunt force trauma to the head, but it wasn’t from her fall. Someone hit her with a square object at least three times. Chloe has an idea, and heads to the elevator. Lucifer offers to go with her, but she says she needs to do it on her own.
Chloe goes to the store room on set and asks to see the camera equipment. She makes small talk with the cameraman, Tiko, who shows up while she looks over a camera battery. Tiko has worked on the show for all 27 seasons, so he’s seen it all. Lucifer is seen to have followed Chloe and is also listening. Finally, Tiko grabs an ax, Chloe reaches for her gun, but Tiko threatens her, and she tries to talk him down. Tiko had an agreement with Melinda. He makes her look good so she can win, and Melinda splits the winners prize with him. But then Kylie got in the way, and after the fight between Kylie and Melinda, Tiko thought their deal was back on, but it wasn’t. He got tired of watching the contestants win money for doing nothing but whining.
Tiko throws the ax at Chloe and Lucifer dashes from cover to deflect the attack. Chloe shoots Tiko, wounding him, then rushes over to Lucifer. The ax missed him, just pinning his jacket to a pillar. Backup shows up and arrest Tiko. Chloe pulls out the ax and studies it for a moment then asks Lucifer if it would really kill him if she pushed it into his chest, simply because she is near him. He tells her yes. But he jumped in front of the thrown ax, knowing it could hurt him. Lucifer says he would do it again, and again, “don't you know that by now?”
That evening Linda finds Amenadiel sitting in Lux. She tells him she is pregnant. He smiles at her.
The following morning, Chloe meets with Kinley. She gives him back the vial, and says she is not going to help him hurt Lucifer. Kinley says they can’t do it without her, and she says that she figured out, that Kinley knew Lucifer was vulnerable around her. She tells him Lucifer’s vulnerability is proof that he has changed. She hopes Kinley will see things her way some day.
In the penthouse, Lucifer is playing his piano when Chloe texts him asking for a do over date. The elevator opens and Kinley steps out. He’s there to talk to Lucifer about Chloe Decker.
