No one wants to be a sin eater, detective. Who wants to be custodian to the world's filth?
– Lucifer

"Sin-Eater" is the third episode of the second season of Lucifer.

Summary[]

"Lucifer and Chloe investigate a gruesome murder after a video of the crime surfaces on social media. When a second video appears, they realize they have a serial killer on their hands. Meanwhile, Lucifer's mom returns as Charlotte Richards. Also, Amenadiel, struggling with his loss of power, has an appointment with Linda."[1]

Plot[]

The episode opens with a man apologizing desperately, he is tied to a post, and a match is struck, he dies wreathed in flames, screaming.

Meanwhile, Lucifer is having fun with fire in the penthouse, dripping candle wax on to a bed partner who’s obviously enjoying the experience, until mum interrupts the moment. The mood is shattered and the woman leave thinking things have gotten too weird, and Lucifer tells mum in no uncertain terms there are parts of his life she cannot share. Mum asks to see Amenadiel, but Lucifer points out his brother will probably take her straight back to Hell.

Dan, meanwhile, was apparently late to pick up Trixie, but he makes it up to her with a bribe of chocolate cake. Trixie wants to know if they’re still planning a family camping trip, Dan then asks to talk to Chloe privately later about their relationship.

Chloe and Lucifer are called out to the scene of the burned man, and learn his confession was posted on the website,Wobble. Ella says the burn pattern indicates most of the accelerant was placed on his groin, which is just hay-making for Lucifer who jokes about “great balls of fire,” “hot pants,” and “fire crotch,” with Ella playing along. Chloe believes the crime feels like a personal grudge against this victim. E-mails from the victim’s boss, Leila Simms (Robin Givens), at Wobble seem to indicate she had a problem with him.

They interview Leila who admits she dated the victim briefly, and confesses to being upset about pictures he shared. When Lucifer informs her Nick died after having his groin ignited, she calls in Ray (Vik Sahay) from Human Resources to pull up a video of Nick setting an intern’s crotch on fire at a company party. The intern, Tommy, was made a laughingstock and quit. Chloe brings in Tommy (Harry Katzman) who says Nick made his life a living hell. Tommy believes Nick deserved what happened to him. Lucifer uses his mojo, but he barely gets out a word before Tommy confesses. Chloe and Lucifer walk out of the interrogation room to find Charlotte in house, surrounded by attentive cops. Lucifer is unhappy, and wants to know why they’re all so chummy. Chloe reminds him Charlotte is a lawyer, plus, she’s a incredibly hot. Lucifer, however, leads Charlotte away from the group and takes her to task for drawing attention to herself, reminding her Amenadiel wants to take her back to hell. She tells him she just wanted to see her son at work. He pushes her into the elevator tells her to leave, while Chloe is wondering how he knows. He deflects, wanting to know if she considers how her relationship with Dan affects those caught in the middle. Chloe thinks he’s talking about Trixie, but Lucifer is actually talking about himself. Dan interrupts with another video of someone apologizing before being killed.

The Punisher Strikes Again

Chloe and Lucifer head to the crime scene and determine they have a serial killer. This victim this time was killed by having apples forced down his throat, and Chloe finds the victim’s phone with the video he apologized for queued up. It’s a sex tape that apparently destroyed the woman involved. Chloe figures the killer is targeting the victims for the embarrassing videos they posted online. A connection exists; both videos were posted to Wobble. In Lucifer's opinion, both victims got what they deserved and heads back to Lux, “I thought someone out there was stealing my job, but far be it for me to stand in the way of excellent work.”

Maze and Linda are at Lux talking about Maze’s success in stepping out on her own and giving up her work at the bar. Charlotte passes by, says hi, and walks away, leaving Maze seething, “I need to get rid of that bitch.” Linda misinterprets her as jealousy over Lucifer’s new girlfriend. Maze says she’s not jealous, and Charlotte isn't a girlfriend, “ She's just toxic. "Lucifer doesn't see it, but I do.” Linda tells Maze to talk to Lucifer as his friend, but Maze says he won't listen, so she decides to find someone who will.

Lucifer surveys Lux's dance floor when he spots mum dancing on a table. She just wanted to find out why humans were happy dancing and, “I have to admit that when I started dancing, rubbing up against the other humans, I got a tingling sensation.” Lucifer decides that is more than enough, and tosses her over his shoulder and carries her off the floor. Mum now says she understands the club but not his job with the police. He tells her he’s a civilian consultant but she doesn’t understand why he still punishes people. He replies, “It’s what I’ve always done.” She says that it is what his Father wanted him to do, and wonders if he is still trying to win Him over. Lucifer's anger flares, he gives her the Devil eye glare, and warns her to be careful.

Back at Wobble, Chloe wants Leila to give her a list of who accessed both victim's videos but is told they don’t track videos that way. Leila explains they have content moderators who take down videos that are too disturbing, and that’s where Chloe catches up with Lucifer. He’s amused by the videos but they are nothing Chloe wants to see. She wants to know what he’s doing there, and he admits he wants to find the killer so he can ask why he punishes. Lucifer loves the moderator's room , “I've seen worse, but never so many collected in one single room; you know, if I ever go back to Hell, I am getting me one of these. Selfish bastards get to see everything.” The comment leads Chloe to theorize the killer is one of the moderators, but Lucifer doesn't like that idea, “...they were just trying to do a job, a job no one else wanted...No one chooses to be a sin-eater, Detective, no one wants to be custodian of the world's filth. Why would they? Absorbing the worst humanity has to offer, day in and day out. Changes you.” He points out “Tim there, with the photos of his ugly children, Ivan and his flowerpots, poor Andrea's still hoping Destiny's Child get back together. Don't you see? These people still have hope.” They discover Leila is actually the person who was moderating the longest, but she disappears before they can talk to her again.

Meanwhile, Amenadiel reflections are interrupted by Maze. He quickly vacuums up his fallen feathers without letting her in the office, but she breaks down the door and tells him she wants the new woman in Lucifer’s life gone and he agrees to talk to his brother just to get Maze to leave. He pays a visit to the penthouse, but Lucifer’s not home. He assumes the woman in the towel is Lucifer's “latest.” She tells him she’s having trouble with her kids and that she’s trying to get closer to them, and asks if he’s a good son. He says he’s trying to be. She asks if a good son would automatically take his father’s side in a divorce and take his mother back to hell? He realizes who she is then. She says she doesn't understand why her children do what they do and is tired of fighting for what she cannot have. She tells him to take her back to Hell, “No matter what happens, I will always love you.”

Back at the precinct, Chloe and Lucifer think Leila was one step ahead of them all along, but then a message pops up on Wobble’s homepage indicating Leila is going to kill herself live on air. Lucifer says, “I thought we were dealing with someone smart and clever, who tortured with a brutal sense of irony, but killing herself whilst humiliating her company Doesn't fit the pattern.” Chloe has a video of Leila leaving Wobble pulled up and they see there is someone in the backseat holding a gun on her. She’s a victim, not the killer. Dan says the trace on the feed keeps pinging Wobble’s main server, so that's where Chloe and Lucifer go - “You know, if you take away the blinky lights and add some lost souls, this place bares a striking resemblance to Hell.”

They spot her as she is being forced to make her apology video. She begs to be let go but Ray, from H.R. forces her to pour gasoline on herself as he lights his lighter. Chloe can’t shoot him because he might drop the lighter, killing Leila. Lucifer says things would be easier if Chloe left, but she won’t, so Lucifer decides to go have a chat with the killer, “I have a question to ask you before you complete this twisted little mise-en-scene....indulge me this one simple query. Why? Why are you a punisher? I understand the longing for justice or the joy of sweet revenge, but no one's forcing you to do this, so why would you take it upon yourself?” Ray says it’s because he couldn’t let the evil spread anymore. Lucifer argues that Ray didn’t have to do anything, he wanted to, that he won’t be able to stop because he loves it, just like the people he punished. Ray agrees that he did like seeing them beg for forgiveness, and Lucifer says, “the difference between us is that you became part of the problem, Ray. Someone deserving punishment.” Ray agrees and drops the lighter just as Chloe sets off the fire extinguisher, Lucifer punches Ray in the face for good measure.

That evening, Chloe speaks with Dan at the station and says she knows she’s been hard on him for a while; she was angry and betrayed, but she knows he’s been working hard to make it right. Dan agrees that they shouldn’t lie to Trixie. He knows he’ll always be Trixie’s dad and part of their lives, and it’s time to move on; he tells her it’s time they get a divorce.

At home, Lucifer is surprised and wary when he sees his brother waiting for him, “Tell me you didn't do it.” Charlotte enters, assuring him she has not been sent to Hell. Lucifer is surprised, and Amenadiel has decided that “Father has a tendency to overreact.” Charlotte is just happy to be in the same room as her sons. But Lucifer says he made a deal with Father and he always keeps his word, and he is a punisher not because his Father said so, but “I punish because I'm good at it, I like giving people their due. It makes me happy.” She says she can't ask for a better reason, and he says her sentence will be to remain on Earth among the creatures she despises, sending her into the life of Charlotte Richards. That’s the price she’ll have to pay if she wants to be with her sons. “So be it.”

Late that night, while walking down a dark street Charlotte is held up at gunpoint. The mugger attacks her, and she pushes him, discovering her supernatural strength as the man slams against a wall. She walks on with a satisfied smile.

Ella: His burning bush?
Lucifer: Ooh! Nice one. That was actually me, by the way, so don't tell anyone.
