Oh, he does inexplicable things from time to time. Marsupials, pomegranates, the gall bladder.
– Lucifer explains God to Chloe

Resting Devil Face" is the eleventh episode of the fifth season of Lucifer.[1]

Summary[]

Lucifer's father - you know, God - decides to experience life as a regular human. Meanwhile, a boxer dies under mysterious circumstances.

Plot[]

In a moment that truly highlights the improved relationship between the celestial brothers, Lucifer and Amenadiel prepare to tell their Father to go home. Father, however, is helping with the bar's plumbing. Amenadiel asks about His powers acting up, Father says He’s had a few glitches since arriving on the mortal plane, but all was well. Lucifer snippily points out “The Creator of the universe glitching is the literal opposite of fine!” He tells his Father it must be the 7th day somewhere, and to take a rest, then leaves for work. Meanwhile, Chloe is seen taking Trixie to Linda's after she was suspended from school.

At the precinct Lucifer and Chloe commiserate about family issues, when God shows up, much to Lucifer's exasperation, “No. No, no, no! Moses wouldn't want this much face time! Uh, sorry, Detective, I need to extinguish a burning bush.” God is stopped by Dan who tries to apologize about sleeping with Charlotte, explaining he hadn't known. God shakes his hand, saying everything is as it should be, then Dan explodes, only to be instantly restored. Lucifer is appalled, “Do not 'mysterious ways' me right now, you just exploded a man!” When God casually says Dan looks fine, Lucifer begs to differ, “Definitely harm and foul! Dad, you need to leave, staying here on Earth is endangering the people I care about.”

At the new crime scene, Ella is clear that what looks like an overdose, is a single injection mark and she believes it’s murder. The victim is a ex-boxer, Albert 'Almighty' Walcott, former heavyweight champion. Chloe has no idea who he was is, but Lucifer and Ella are fans and act out his last fight.

Lucifer then notices God among the looky-loos, and goes over to tell him to leave. God delightedly tells His son that He has made Himself temporarily human so that He can finally begin to understand His son. Chloe arrives and asks the Omniscient Being “who done it,” but for the first time, He does not know. Chloe rounds them all up and they head back to the precinct.

In the lab, Lucifer introduces his Father to Ella, who is delighted. God tell her all of her support has not gone unnoticed, drawing a confused look. When He sips at His slushy, and gets brain freeze, Ella comments “Brain freeze. We've all been there, big guy,” which is ironically, the term she has always used to refer to God in the abstract. Ella tells Chloe about a massive dose of a synthetic stimulant in the victim's system. They head to the hospital to ask a few questions.

At the hospital, a Doctor Porter tells them that Almighty was depressed after a heart attack ended his career. She claims he apparently tried to steal drugs from the hospital. When told the victim had a drug called YSD in his system, she describes it and Lucifer is able to produce a sample from a pill collection in his pocket. He knows the only drug dealer who deals with it, the Colonel, so they set up a sting. When Lucifer arrives at the meet, however, he learns his Father is already there and he’s floored. He takes his Father aside and asks what he is doing there, “If I truly want to understand you, I have to experience the full breadth of earthly existence. Risk, danger....” Lucifer comments He will be experiencing death if He blows their cover. When Lucifer hands the money over to The Colonel for the drug purchase, trying to hurry things along, his Father lets slip that the transaction is part of a police sting.

When the pair are then held at gunpoint, Lucifer suggests Dad power up, but He says His powers are not at hand. When Colonel punches God, and God feels pain for the first time, Lucifer becomes furious and attacks the Colonel, “No one lays a hand on my Father!” Within moments all the dealers are unconscious, and Lucifer has the Colonel by the throat, God gently tells him to put the human down. Lucifer then leaves the arrest to Chloe and takes his father off to retrieve His powers.

At the penthouse, God quietly comments, “Your face, Lucifer. The one you used in Hell. In person, it really is quite intense...Why did you choose that face? Deep down, that face is how you see yourself.” They are interrupted by Trixie's arrival, who had spent her time at Linda's discussing how she had been acting out because she was mad at someone she cared about – Lucifer. She kicks him and insults him, and in turn he bans her from the penthouse for a month.

Meanwhile, Chloe questions the Colonel, and threatens to ring her mother to see if she’d be disappointed in her daughter. Her Achilles heel exposed, the Colonel says she sold YSD to Kristoff, a fight trainer. Lucifer joins Chloe to meet Kristoff who calls Almighty one of the greats. Lucifer asks Kristoff what he desires, and he tells him he wants more YSD - he admits he gets tired of babysitting fighters, and the drug helps them focus, and he knows it is safe as he uses it himself. He says he never gave Almighty YSD because he wouldn’t have taken it – body a temple and all that. Chloe then rethinks the assumption Almighty was trying to steal drugs at the hospital, perhaps he was after medical records. Chloe heads to the hospital to confront Dr. Porter, where she tells her that she believes Almighty was looking to expose the doctor for his botched surgery. She then tells Porter that she is not okay, and pretending that she is, is only hurting people depending on her — she asks her to put down the scalpel.

Lucifer and Amenadiel, however, have another task, Dad cannot be found, and they are searching everywhere for Him. Trixie and God cross paths in the subway, and He tells her He has run away because He feels like He has messed up. Trixie tells him she is running away because she’s mad at Lucifer, she thought they were friends, but he went away for months without a word, and is now the reason he mother is sad. God tells her “You know I'm Lucifer's Dad, right? Well, some of the ways he acts... I think they may be My fault. As a Father, I tried to give My children just the right amount of free will... the right amount of responsibility, consequence. Looking back at how I raised Lucifer... I'm not sure I got it all right.” Trixie says being a parent is probably pretty hard. Maze who had been stalking God, angry at his failure to provide her with a soul, overhears the conversation and decides not to hurt Him. Trixie suggests they head home, and he then recalls where he left his powers. Back at Linda's God reveals he left his powers with Charlie, safe with family, and restores them to Himself.

At Lux, Maze and Dan commiserate on their days and decide they need drinks. God arrives and thanks Maze for not killing him. She complains she can't even be the killer she was created to be, and he says, “The funny thing about miracles is they happen every day. An angel has a child with a human. The Devil can fall in love. We can all learn, and we can all grow.” Maze scoffs, she can't grow a soul. God smiles and asks, “Can't she?”

At home, Chloe speaks to Trixie. Trixie tells her mother that she can tell she is sad, and Chloe agrees she is and wants to let her in; “the truth is, things between Lucifer and me, they are a little up in the air right now. And, I'm not sure if we will, end up as partners or friends, or something more, but, if he and I are gonna try and figure this out... I have to tell him my real feelings.” She then reassures Trixie that she and Dan, will always be her parents and be there for her, no matter what.

At the penthouse, God sits down his sons and tells he’s been slipping for a while, so he thinks it’s time for him to retire. The brothers share a look, during which, God disappears.

Trivia[]

  • The episode title is said by Lucifer to God after God comments that Lucifer's devil face is quite intense when experienced in person.
  • Apparently the Dinosaurs were a previous experiment God worked on before humanity.
    • Lucifer implies God thought they could survive the meteor strike that resulted in extinction (choosing not to look into the future); which is why he doesn't trust God believing things will work out.
  • God appreciates Ella for always having faith in his plans.
  • Unlike his children, God is not used to experiencing a range of emotions. Fear for his life and seeing Lucifer's devil face shock him deeply.
  • There's a callback in the first scene as God does some plumbing work behind the bar. In Everything's Coming Up Lucifer, Chloe suggested that Lucifer could be "Larry Morningstar, the son of a plumber in Connecticut".
  • Three things Lucifer confirmed his Father created for inexplicable reasons are marsupials, pomegranates, and the gall bladder.
  • Lucifer implies that while he is often seen with a alcoholic drink, he rarely overindulges (as he told Chloe prior that he can't really get drunk and only drinks for the taste). He describes The Colonel with "drinks like a fish; surprisingly charming. Reminds me of a young me."
  • God seems pleased with the colors available on Earth, stating he outdid himself with putting a great variety in the world.
  • Just before operating Doctor Porter says "It's a beautiful day to operate", a probable reference to Grey's Anatomy character, Derek Shepard, and his famous quote "It's a beautiful day to save lives".
    • Tom Ellis has played a doctor in the American series, Rush, and the British series The Eastenders.
  • Lucifer's comment "Oh, just prevented GI Jane here from pulling a Nietzsche," is a reference to German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophical proposal, God is dead.
  • The song "Believer" by Imagine Dragons is played in comical fashion since it stopped thrice.
  • As Chloe and Lucifer are walking into Kristoff's gym, there are ads for several entities that have made appearances in previous episodes:
