Napoleon, born Napoleone Buonaparte in Corsica, the historical military and political leader rose to prominence during the French Revolution and led several successful campaigns during that war. He became a French general, first consul (1799–1804), and emperor of the French (1804–1814/15). He revolutionized military organization and training; and sponsored the Napoleonic Code, the prototype of later civil-law codes. His driving passion, however, was the military expansion of France, and his Napoleonic Wars lasted from 1799 to 1815, until his final defeat by Allied forces at Waterloo.
