Plot[]
The episode opens with a flashback, Officer John Decker (Chris Payne Gilbert), is grabbing a a sandwich during his shift. He jokes with the grill owner and he gives him two tickets to his daughter's first film, Hot Tub High School. He calls her his “little monkey.” As he turns to leave, a man enters wearing a hoodie and shoots him twice in the chest, leaving Officer Decker dead on the floor.
In the present, Detective Chloe Decker is furious the man who confessed to killing her dad is being given compassionate furlough. She’s not in the best mood to deal with Lucifer, who thinks he broke his therapist. Linda won’t take his calls, “I think I truly scared her off.” Chloe tells Lucifer he can’t help her right now, and she can't deal with him. Lucifer actually takes it to heart when she says it is because he’s “too you.” “Yes, you're right, Detective, being me seems to be a problem, doesn't it? Everywhere I go, someone gets hurt. Well, clearly, I need to be Not-Me, instead. Someone better, more helpful, more boring.” Dan arrives and immediately notices something is seriously bothering her. Lucifer says he didn’t notice, but then he realizes Dan did.
Chloe leaves to visit the prison, upset Joe Fields (Lobo Sebastian), the man convicted of killing her dad, is being released for his granddaughter’s christening. He has been a model prisoner, however, and as he is loaded into the transport van, he looks toward Chloe who is complaining to the warden, and smiles faintly. Chloe watches, seething, when Lucifer calls to tell her he has a plan, “I've decided to try and walk a mile in another man's shoes. See the world from a different perspective. I'm going to learn how to Douche. I may have to rephrase that one. But do I have your permission to follow Daniel?” She gives him the go-ahead without really listening, then follows the van only to find it in an alley, the officers shot dead in the front seat, Joe Fields dead in the back. She calls it in, and tells Dan and his shadow she was first on the scene, both of them point out what a bad idea following him had been. Ella thinks it’s messed up Chloe’s assigned to work the case, and Lucifer seems to think, “You should be ecstatic. Your father's killer just got the ultimate punishment.” No one thinks she murdered Fields, but she says she is stepping away from the case because of the conflict. Dan doesn’t think involving Lucifer is a good idea, surprisingly Lucifer agrees, calling himself a loose cannon, “She needs someone like you. A reliable, helpful, boring detective. Now, the good news is that's me as well now. So, the Dans are on the case... I assure you I'm taking this very seriously.” Chloe says it would mean a lot if they work the case together, so Dan agrees. Ella arrives with the news a set of fingerprints in the van belong to an ex-con named Rodney Lam who served time with Fields.
At the new apartment, Maze has a job interview as a pre-school aide, but she’s dressed like Maze. Chloe says she's not sure the outfit is appropriate, and Trixie asks whether Maze even likes kids, the advises Maze finds a job she loves. Trixie then asks Chloe about her dad, Chloe says she misses him. Trixie goes to her room when a woman knocks at the door and pulls a gun on Chloe. The woman, Tina Fields (Caitlin Stryker), ironically thinks Chloe has killed her father. Chloe is able to disarm Tina, who then starts crying, saying she never believed Joe killed John Decker. She had received a video from her father’s lawyer upon his death. Tina and Chloe watch the video in which Joe swears he didn’t kill Decker. Chloe figures out from the background that Joe recorded it the day her father died, just minutes before he was killed across town, meaning Fields took the fall for someone else and the real killer is still at large.
Lucifer has changed his entire look, wearing jeans and a hoodie, taking being the new Dan very much to heart, “I'll have you know I take the School of Dan quite seriously, even if it does involve skinny-fit jeans... I get it now... your boring attire is like camo for the average Joe, blend in, catch the baddie off guard. Afterwards they'll forget you're even there.” Since his therapist is MIA, it seems he's treating himself. Dan has tracked Rodney Lam to Pink’s, hotdog place, and is prepared to stake it out for as long as it takes when Lucifer points out Rodney is sitting just a few feet away eating a hotdog. Rodney (Ronnie Gene Blevins) goes willing when placed under arrest. He confesses to killing Joe Fields because he disrespected him. Dan suspects Lam is lying, and makes him go through the details, but they don’t match the crime scene; Rodney even has the location wrong. Lucifer is impressed “Oh, I see what you did there. Gosh, that's why you're Dan One.” He then says he must take a break from his “Dansformation” for the good of the case, and obviously shifts mental gears to use his mojo on Lam who admits he was paid to confess to the crime so he could provide for his family. If they don’t arrest him, then he doesn’t get paid, they promise to arrest him for false confession and Lam then lays out the whole scheme, while Lucifer re-submerges into his “Dansformation” and mimics the way Dan sits and even his fidgits.
Maze knocks on Linda’s office door, saying she needs a character reference. Linda quietly locks the door and doesn’t answer, but when she turns around, Maze is sitting on her desk. Linda starts violently, and asks if Maze can teleport. “What? No. You left your window open.” Linda tells her she knows the truth about Lucifer and now she realizes, “You’re a demon. He told me… I thought it was a sexual metaphor!” Maze admits she’s a demon but asks if it’s really so bad. Linda still cannot cope and asks Maze to leave.
Back at the precinct Chloe tells Dan and Lucifer Fields didn’t kill her dad. He was paid to say he did and she has the account number where the money came from. The Dans tell her Rodney also got paid for making a false confession, and the paperwork shows the money paid to both men was paid out of the same account. Whoever killed Joe Fields must have also killed Chloe’s father. Chloe is going through the evidence box from her dad’s murder when Lucifer and Dan enter. Chloe notices they’re dressed alike which Dan tells her to ignore, delivering the bad news the bank account traces back to a dummy front for a Russian syndicate. Their suspect is Boris Sokolov who owns a bathhouse and has a reputation of connecting criminals but keeping his own hands clean. The Dans proceed to confront Boris at the bathhouse wearing only towels. Dan wants Lucifer to approach Boris quietly to try to convince him he needs a fall guy for a murder he’s going to commit. Lucifer doesn’t really have subtle mode, so he yells for Boris, and introduces himself as Dan, something that is not a lie for him because it is who he is truly trying to be. Boris tells Lucifer he is a human lie detector, and Lucifer says he has a similar skill, than admits, “I want someone dead... Lucifer Morningstar... he hurts people, and not just his enemies, those close to him, as well. In fact, I think he hurts them most of all. Believe me, when I say, Boris, that the world would be a better place without him.” Boris nods and says both men seem to have a true hatred for this Morningstar. Boris agrees to find a patsy for Lucifer's death. A handshake seals the deal and earns Boris a quick arrest.
Perry Smith brings Chloe the Field's personal effects while Ella checks on her. Ella volunteers to work with her to go through the box, and says she’s been looking into John Decker's cases to see what he was working on during the last six months before he was killed. Chloe thinks there was a clever cover-up, Ella points out there is a set of fingerprints yet to be identified, and says she’ll start working on that. Chloe then interrogates Boris, saying she’s not really on the case; she’s a daughter looking for her dad’s murderer, “I'm not gonna let this go, so you point me in the right direction or I swear to God, I'm gonna make your life a living hell.” Boris believes her and says he once heard that John Decker was sniffing somewhere he didn’t belong. Dan tells Lucifer he did nice work earlier and didn't know how he had lied and gotten away with it. Lucifer says it wasn’t a lie, agreeing he has serious issues, why else he’d be doing all of this “Dan-ing.” Lucifer says he hasn’t figured out Dan’s secret, but Dan says he doesn’t have one. Chloe interrupts and says she’s discovered her father’s death was a hit. Lucifer shadows Dan after hours and discovers him attending an improv class where he does a sketch lampooning Lucifer, who is livid. After the set, he approaches Dan angry, but for a change, Dan comes back with anger, telling Lucifer his name is Dan or Det. Espinoza. Lucifer calms down and admits, “you're everything that I'm not. Boring, helpful, your life is simple.” In a grass is always greener reveal, Dan responds, “Come on, man. You're rich, you're handsome, you drive fancy cars, you date hot girls, you have no kids, you have no responsibilities. How much more simple can life get?” Lucifer says Dan doesn’t know the whole story and the truth hurts people. Dan admits he’s done things he’s not proud of, and the two come to an understanding, and Lucifer agrees not to tell Chloe about the improv.
Lucifer shows up at Chloe’s, no longer Dansformed, admitting he's himself again, “So I doubt I'll be of much help.” Maze attacks him for costing her a friend, Maze wishes he would think about someone other than himself once in a while, “And there we have it, ladies, my wake of destruction. Anyone else you need harmed, hmm?” Chloe orders him to help her, because she is close to something, he settles and offers something that has been bothering him. He wants to know why Joe Fields smiled at her. Chloe says he wouldn’t and then figures Fields was actually smiling at the person next to her, the deputy warden, Perry Smith. Ella found the warden’s prints in the van, when they shouldn’t have been there. She thinks Joe wanted out of the deal and the warden approved his request for family leave just so he could set him up for a hit, “If I'm gonna take this guy down, I need my partner and that's you. Lucifer Morningstar,” making Lucifer feel much better about himself.
By the time Chloe and Lucifer make it to the prison, the warden has vanished. As Lucifer walks Chloe back to her apartment, he tells her at least she knows who the real killer is for the first time. They then hear noises from inside, and enter and find Maze has captured the warden and has him tied up and gagged, “I was bored. Had nothing to do. So, I tracked down the scumbag myself. It just... felt right.” When Chloe says it will feel good to call it in, Lucifer suggests, “You have a choice to make here... Order off-menu for once. Maze and I certainly won't judge.” Chloe considers, and rips the gag off Smith's mouth, enraged and ready to shoot him. He promises her the names of the people in his operation, anything she wants. She makes a real effort to control herself and says, “We'll see how you do in the prison that you ran, I'll bet your inmates will treat you real nice... All I want is for you to know that John Decker's kid got you.”
Maze is back at Linda’s office door, she wants to share the news she got her first paycheck as a bounty hunter. Inside, Linda smiles as Maze explains “Hunting humans is a job! Who knew? First thing I wanted to do was to celebrate with my friend. That's you, Linda.” On the other side of the door, Linda is struggling, then finally opens the door and asks, “how can we be friends? You're a... you're a demon. Lucifer's the Devil. How am I supposed to get over that?” Maze asks what’s changed, they are all still them. She holds the paycheck and offers to buy her a drink. Linda goes with her.
At Chloe’s, she is making sandwiches and Lucifer takes the one that was meant for Trixie. He’s larger and hungrier, and Trixie says it’s okay he must have really wanted it. After she leaves, Lucifer becomes thoughtful, “I don't care much for my dad. But... you clearly... care about yours... So, what I'm trying to say is... I think he would be proud of you.” When Chloe begins to cry, he tries to apologize, and she tells him to shut up and hugs him. Startled, then warmly pleased, he returns the hug.
