"Is This Really How It's Going To End?!" is the fifteenth episode of the fifth season of Lucifer.[1]

Summary[]

Lucifer learns that most of his siblings don't seem to want him to land the big promotion. Dan offers to set Ella up with an old friend, and discusses Amenadiel's desire to join the police force with him.

Plot[]

The episode opens on the campaign trail; Lucifer has invited his brother Jophiel to Lux for a night of hedonism. The two of them have enjoyed partying together through the millennia, and Jophiel and Lucifer have always been close, with Jophiel recalling when Lucifer pantsed Napoleon. Because of this, Lucifer thinks he might sway Jophiel's vote with a jog to these memories and an offer of Belisario Viscount, the finest vodka in the world. Jophiel, however, can't quite see Lucifer as God. Lucifer reminds Jophiel of Michael's smear campaign against him that went back for millennia, and that he was responsible for suggesting to God his powers were going. Jophiel acknowledges, "Yeah, Michael's kind of a dick.... But he keeps the trains running, you know?" Lucifer is incensed, "Michael has got your vote because...he's the Devil you know? Do you have any idea how ironically infuriating that is?"

Lucifer is next seen with Chloe, walking to a crime scene. Chloe reveals worries about what her new life as consultant to Lucifer if he is the new God. Lucifer confides that he is unsure whether he can convince his siblings to vote for him, but Chloe says that if anyone can persuade them he can. Lucifer takes comfort in that, and he offers his arm to Chloe with the words, "Shall we, future Mrs. G", they proceed to the crime scene arm in arm.

At the scene in a wine locker, Dan approaches Ella and tries to get her to agree to meet his old partner, Carol. Ella is reluctant to start dating again, and objects to Carol having "a girl name." Lucifer and Chloe enter the scene, and Lucifer comments on the tragedy, after a beat, Ella realizes he means the spilled wine. It is Lucifer who points out that the victim, a morgue attendant, could never afford such a collection, and Dan heads off to check on the financials. Chloe takes a moment to look around and reaches a decision. At the precinct Chloe assembles everyone, and announces she has handed in her two-week notice and wants to tell everyone "goodbye for now." Ella is shocked, and asks Dan if he knew this was coming. Dan says, "No. But I got a pretty good idea what it's all about. Or should I say who it's about." Lucifer embraces Chloe after she finishes her speech. Dan tells Chloe she is very happy for her, but Ella, is not very happy and tells Chloe that she does not want to solve crimes without her. Chloe tells her she is leaving to help Lucifer when he takes over the family business, leading Ella to realize that they are both leaving. Ella shouts at Lucifer in Spanish and hits him with a case file. She then storms off, taking the bottle of wine Lucifer had lifted from the crime scene.

Chloe and Lucifer then leave to question a suspect, a psychic called Odetta Watson. Lucifer mentions. "My dad did give some humans the gift, you know. Maybe this is one of the real ones." Chloe is skeptical, and once she points out that Odetta's partner is dead, Odetta gives them the basics of the scam she, the tech, Jonathan Donnelly, and a fence called TJ Ross had going.

Dan and Trixie, meanwhile, are happily playing Unstable Unicorns in Dan's apartment. Trixie leaves the room to find her glitter scarf for Dan to wear, so he is equipped to go first in the next game. Amenadiel then arrives and tells Dan that he has figured out he wants to join the police force. Dan laughs at the idea, telling Amenadiel that "an angel and a detective solving crimes makes total sense". Amenadiel is disappointed that Dan is not more supportive of his idea. Dan tries to apologize but Amenadiel leaves.

Back at Lux, Lucifer hosts the second on his list of "swing votes," Saraqael, his sister, who had supported him during his rebellion. She thinks he is trying his mojo on her, but Lucifer clarifies he is playing to strengths as a granter of favors. Despite a very compelling deal to meet her favorite celebrity chef and have standing reservation at his restaurant, Saraqael turns Lucifer down when he cannot tell her why he wants to be God.

When Chloe and Lucifer then track down the suspected fence, TJ, they discover his house has been searched. When TJ then shows up, he manages to kick Lucifer across the room and leap over a 6 foot garden wall. Chloe and Lucifer are stunned. After the house has been through CSI, Ella tells them, "So whoever killed Jonathan Donnelly also ransacked TJ's place. They had to be looking for something Jonathan stole off a corpse. Given what was left behind, I'd say they haven't found it yet. But what is this object? Who wants it? And why? And where does our killer buy his enormous boots? It's all a mystery, isn't it? A thrilling, tangled web of discovery and contradiction that you two are never gonna see because you're running off....!"

At Linda's house, Maze is trying to pick her Queen of Hell look. Linda thinks she's distracting herself, worried that having a soul will prevent Maze from enjoy torturing the damned. Maze tells her that she plans to slowly suffocate her soul. Lucifer arrives, noting Maze looks like a "boney xylophone"; he asks if any demons are running around in a fresh corpse, showing her TJ's photo. Maze is not aware of any, again stating that as ruler of Hell she would know for certain. Lucifer tells her to be on the lookout for rogue demons, and he would handle the election.

Lucifer sat the last swing vote down and admitted to Zadkiel, the angel of righteousness, the truth; " I was wrong....as much as it pains me to say, my rebellion was ill-conceived. Why? Because I did it for the wrong reasons. I rebelled out of anger at Father, out of a desire to prove that I was better than him, but I've changed. I've spent my time on Earth growing, getting over my Daddy issues. I know how monumental his job actually was and is now. Those are big shoes to fill, but I promise you, Zadkiel, I will give it my absolute best." Despite himself, Zadkiel is impressed, he admits, "That was well spoken. Emotionally evolved.... Impressive." He still, however, refused to support his brother's bid. Frustrated and hurt, Lucifer tells him it is all true, but the real reason he want's to be God "I'm doing it for love. And it gets worse. I'm doing it for the love of a human. I am trying to be God so that I can finally be worthy of her." Then Zadkiel angers him for calling Chloe the gift Father had made. Lucifer snaps that she is much more than that, that she is all he cares about. Lucifer storms out, leaving a stunned Zadkiel looking thoughtful.

At the precinct, the team has compiled a list of TJ's clients, and Dan volunteers to go speak to the first one. At the house, he realizes there is something wrong and calls in a possible home invasion. He is then confronted by an armed man. When his back-up arrives, the home owner is dead and Dan is missing, his phone smashed and left behind. He did manage to leave them a clue, however. He had torn a dog tag from his assailant and dropped it in a grate for Chloe and Lucifer to find. As his friends search frantically for Dan, Ella identifies the tag - French Foreign Legion, part of a mercenary group run by Vincent Le Mec. Maze says she will find him. Lucifer pulls her aside and points out time is of the essence, they must call in all of the underworld favors owed him; Le Mec is famous for leaving no witnesses. Lucifer's favors get the team a list of possible locations, the angels are dispatched to the furthest afield. Dan is beaten and questioned by the mercenary Le Mec, he is shown a photo of a grave which confuses him. After Le Mec then receives a call, he nods to his henchman and walks away. Dan mumbles and the henchman approaches only for Dan to head-butt him and make a break for it. Le Mec shoots Dan in the back. When he turns, stunned, he is shot twice more and collapses. Chloe and Cacuzza find the site where Dan is being held. Still alive, Dan tries to tell her what he learned, Chloe holds him and tells him to hang on. He says he waited to tell her the name Caleb on the photo of the grave he had been shown. Then he tells her to say good bye to their daughter and then says goodbye to Chloe.

Dan is rushed to the hospital. Lucifer, Chloe, Ella, Maze, Linda, and Amenadiel sit waiting. A doctor emerges and shakes her head, Chloe tires to deny it, weeping. Maze turns from the others and weeps into her hand; unwilling to show her pain. Trixie arrives at that moment, and she demands to see her dad, but Chloe stops her; "Daddy's gone." Sobbing, she tells Maze not to cry because it isn't true, and she begs Lucifer to tell her it isn't true because she knows Lucifer never lies. With sad reluctant gaze at Trixie, Lucifer can only say, "My dear, sweet child, I can't." With her final hope extinguished, Trixie collapses into a hug from Chloe.

Away from the others, Amenadiel asks if they know who did this. Lucifer explains the mercenaries were tracking down stolen objects from dead bodies; the name "Caleb" was then last thing Dan had told them. Amenadiel recognizes the name and leads Lucifer to Caleb Mayfield's grave, which has been dug up. The brothers realize that Michael is involved after all. Amenadiel explains that he laid his necklace on Caleb's body after his murder. Lucifer realizes Michael was searching for it to rebuild the flaming sword and he hired the mercenaries to find it. Each piece of the Flaming Sword gives a power; the necklace being the strength. Lucifer then realizes Gabriel secretly brought the other pieces back from the Void when she visited Goddess. Michael wants to win a war not an election.

Later that night, Chloe puts Trixie to bed. Lucifer offers her his flask but she turns it down. Chloe is feeling guilty that she had allowed Dan to go out alone, but Lucifer reveals that Michael was behind the murder. Chloe begs him to tell her Dan's death meant something, that it would lead to his being God. Lucifer reveals that for him to be God, he likely had to go to war with Michael; but his track record with wars in Heaven is pretty bad. He did not win a single swing vote; even his honesty with Zadkiel backfired. Chloe asks what he means, and Lucifer reveals his true motive in wanting to be God is to be worthy of Chloe. Chloe is stunned Lucifer would ever doubt her feelings, "So you're telling me...that Trixie is in there right now crying herself to sleep and the real reason that she's going to grow up without a father is because you still don't know how I feel about you? How is that even possible? If that's the case, Lucifer, then your brothers and your sisters are right. You shouldn't be God."

At Dan's funeral, Ella meets Dan's friend Carol, whom she decides to give a chance. She steps away to speak to Amenadiel, to whom she reveals that Dan turned in his application for the police academy. Amenadiel speaks with Lucifer, telling him that he went to Heaven to see Dan. Lucifer imagines Dan is enjoying himself, only to be shocked by Amendiel's next words; Dan is not there. Lucifer realizes it means Dan is in Hell, Lucifer helplessly says that it's not fair. Amenadiel gives the eulogy as Dan's best friend, saying when he first came to LA, he was angry and confused about his place in the world, unable to connect with people; but Dan knew how to. Dan taught him how to be a good friend and father; how to be a good man. Dan tried to be better when he was already the best man he could be. Crying, Amenadiel states he will always be his best friend. As Amenadiel sat down, Lucifer took his hand to comfort, then he joined Ella to sing It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday in a duet of English and Spanish. Maze arrives, telling Lucifer that she found the killers, Lucifer nods. As they sing, the flag over Dan's coffin is folded and given to Trixie. This is intercut with Lucifer and Maze infiltrating the merc base. Maze gets bloody, killing at least eight men, only Le Mec remains standing at the end. Lucifer whispers in his ear, bringing him his hell early, and leaves him alive and on his knees, begging.

That evening, a stunned and grieving Lucifer is in session with Linda, whom he tells they found the killers and made them pay. Linda tells him that while pain is inevitable, the suffering is optional. Angry, he shouts at her not to counsel him on pain and inevitability. Lucifer tells Linda her job should not exist; more specifically pain should not exist. Believing reality - "the system" - was broken, and has now hurt everyone he cares about. Lucifer tells Linda that this has forced his hand; now he needs to be God. Wondering what he means, Linda is told that "we are going to war."

Trivia[]

  • Ella is the one who says the title name in the episode.
  • While investigating the murder of a morgue tech who was tortured by force fed wine Lucifer makes a wine-pun. Ella explains the torture to which Lucifer responds with "So he was water-bordeaux'ed?".
    • Dan actually liked the joke and laughed. Something he NEVER does. A first sign Something bad would happen.
  • When the Lucifer title card is shown, the Lucifer theme isn't played. A different theme is played instead. This reflects the grim ending.
  • A jab is made at Fox, the show's previous home channel; Lucifer mutters "good luck with that" when the fortune teller mentions helping a network executive that worked for Fox.
    • At the same time, Lucifer confirms God did bless some humans with genuine psychic powers.
  • When Maze tries her "Queen of Hell" outfit, she puts on a half-mask, a reference to the Maze from the comics.
  • Lucifer calls in every favor he has in the LA underworld to find Dan; showing just how much he valued him as a friend.
  • This episode marks the death of Dan.
  • Lucifer imagines Dan's heaven would have him swimming in pudding.
    • Its later confirmed there's a room full of cotton candy, so Lucifer may not have been using hyperbole.
  • Amenadiel does not realize the short-term consequence of his choice to become an officer; he will have to pull off a disappearing act to hide his immortality like Marcus Pierce eventually.
  • This episode guest stars Rob Benedict who played God on Supernatural. He portrays Vincent Le Mec.
    • Considering God had exploded him momentarily, it can be said that essentially Dan was killed by two different versions of gods. (God in Lucifer: Explodes him in the police station and Lucifer kept the memory. God in Supernatural: Kills Dan by gunshots and gets traumatized by Lucifer in act of Revenge)
  • This is the first time Lucifer calls Trixie "Trixie" instead of a nickname or a descriptive phrase.
  • Dan notably looks washed out and colorless in more than one sense. From his wardrobe to his hair losing color. Very likely a visible representation of all the stress he's been under until Operation Payback Dan finally manifesting.
  • Daniel's death in Chloe's arms foreshadows his guilt over Trixie, thus denying him heaven because of his guilt.
