You know that if you had possessed the Flaming Sword, the weapon that guarded Eden, the weapon that can cut through anything, even the Gates of Heaven itself, well, you would've won that rebellion.

The Flaming Sword is a phenomenally powerful divine weapon, the most powerful weapon in the Universe. God split the sword into three pieces after Lucifer Morningstar's rebellion.

The weapon has the power to cut through anything, including the gates of Heaven and even the fabric of reality itself. The Flaming Sword is also capable of eradicating any being in the Universe, including angels, meaning that the soul of any being killed by the Flaming Sword will be erased from existence, no Heaven or Hell when they die, just gone.

When all of the pieces are combined, the sword's flames extends to the size and shape of a sword's length.

The primary component of the sword is the Blade of Death, also known as Azrael's Blade. As the name suggests, it is a weapon wielded by Azrael, the Angel of Death, and is capable of eradication on its own. When in contact with humans, it can amplify even the tiniest spark of anger in whoever is holding it, turning it into murderous rage.

Another piece, the Medallion Of Life, was left on Earth and grants its wearer the power of healing, as well as granting divine knowledge to the wearer, as if God was using that person as a vessel.

The third piece, The Key, which acts as a linchpin that binds the other pieces together, was made into a necklace that God gifted to his 'Favorite Son', Amenadiel. The Key is capable of granting super strength to any human who holds it, as it is the strength that holds the sword together. It's influence makes it possible for a Human holder to overpower an Angel in a fight, and survive flight between realms. When Azrael's Blade is not on Earth, the other two pieces lose their powers.

History[]

Separating the Sword[]

The Flaming Sword is the weapon that guarded Eden. However, during Lucifer Morningstar's rebellion, God split the sword into three pieces, thinking that Lucifer would use it against Him.[1] God later lied about destroying the sword entirely.[2] The details of God dividing the Flaming Sword were transcribed in a book written in Sumerian sometime around the bronze age.[1]

Temporarily Igniting the Sword[]

After Goddess arrived on Earth, She realized the Flaming Sword had not been destroyed and set out to reignite it to return to Heaven to attack God for banishing Her to Hell.[3] After a long search, She, Amenadiel, and Lucifer found all three pieces.[1]

Lucifer cuts a hole into the Void

Lucifer Morningstar cuts a hole into the Void.

Lucifer assembled the pieces of the sword and its true long fiery form revealed itself. Lucifer refused to use the sword to return Goddess to Heaven as war would break out and many of his Angel siblings would die. Instead, he used the sword to open a hole in the Universe into a Void, and asked Goddess to go through and create a new universe for Herself. Not wanting the death that would come from the war, Goddess left Charlotte Richards's body and went through the cut. Lucifer then removed the Key from the sword and tossed it through the hole into the void before the rift closed.[4]

Battle for Supremacy[]

Three years later, Michael had Gabriel steal Blade of Death and the Medallion of Life from Goddess' new Universe while delivering a message to Her on Lucifer's behalf, so michael could reassemble the sword to win the battle for God's throne.[5] All he needed was the the Key to use the sword, so he hired French mercenaries to hunt for the Key which was stolen from Caleb Mayfield's body and ended up in the hands of a fence named TJ Ross.[6] Though, the mercenaries failed to retrieve the Key, Michael was able to get himself, killing TJ in the process - something Lucifer was unwilling to do.

Lucifer vs Michael

Michael uses the sword against Lucifer in their final battle.

During the fight between Lucifer and Michael for Heaven's throne, the sword was once again united by Michael and wielded against his twin. Lucifer, in turn, used Zadkiel's staff and he manages to counter the sword for a while before it finally broke in half. Michael was willing to use the sword to eradicate his brother from existence, but Lucifer and Chloe Decker managed to separate the Blade and the key. Michael then killed Chloe with the broken staff.

After Lucifer resurrected her, and she then defeated Michael, using the strength the Key gave her, Lucifer ignited the sword for the second time and demanded his twin get to his knees for judgement. Though Michael accepted what he believed to be his execution, Lucifer, instead used the Flaming Sword to sever his wings. After the other Angels took a knee before him as the new deity, Lucifer raised the Flaming Sword into the air to signify his victory.[7]

Powers[]

Bloody Hell, it worked! I guess it can cut through anything, even the world itself.

in "The Good, the Bad and the Crispy"
  • Absolute Sharpness: When complete, it's said to be able to cut through anything, even the Gates of Heaven, and was seen to be able to cut through the very fabric of space.
    • Dimensional Slicing: The sword can cut through time and space, creating a portal to a Universe-sized void.
  • Eradication: Whether in it's complete form, or as the Blade of Death, the Flaming Sword has the ability to eradicate any being it kills, whether they are Celestial Beings and Humans. Meaning that the soul anyone killed by this blade will be completely erased from existence, rather than going to Heaven or Hell.
  • Absolute Immunity: Whoever is armed with this sword is immune to all the powers, even the power of God or Goddess. It's because of this power that God chose to divide the sword into three pieces after Lucifer Morningstar's rebellion, if Lucifer had had it at that time, he would have won.

    • It is said that God used the Flaming Sword to block the entrance to the Garden of Eden after Adam and Eve were banished for eating the Forbidden Fruit so that humanity could never return there.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • The Flaming Sword so far is the only object in the Post-Crisis Multiverse to open pathways into other universes. However, it seems the wielder needs skill, as Lucifer only succeeded in opening a Void between worlds.
