"Everything's Okay" is the first episode of the fourth season of Lucifer.

Summary[]

While investigating a beekeeper's murder with Lucifer, Chloe insists that she's completely fine with his devilish revelation, thank you very much.

Plot[]

The episode opens with Lucifer at Lux, singing Creep - every night for more than two weeks. Lucifer hasn't seen Chloe for a month; not since she went on vacation after she saw his Devil face. He is worried about her reaction, and tells Maze, who offers to find her, that it has become a question of if, not when she returns. When Lee Garner appears at his shoulder wanting payback for their past interactions, Lucifer first terrifies him, then rewards him, loading him down with cash and gold, telling him to go out and prove that he is more than “just a thief.”

At the next crime scene, Lucifer turns up to find a bad tempered Dan and a sympathetic Ella, but no Chloe. Lucifer thinks it’s time to quit the LAPD, and tells Ella so – just as Chloe walks up and calmly goes back to work. Lucifer is stunned, and follows her about as slack jawed as a Devil can be. He asks if she is alright, and she says everything is fine. Astounded, Lucifer almost gets an expletive out.

The team is working a murder case, a man named Bob Goldbach was murdered at a beehive with a honey scraper. Bob’s wife Lenore wasn’t there when it happened and can’t think of anyone who would want to hurt Bob. While Chloe is interviewing Lenore, Lucifer continues to stare at her, finally she pulls him aside and tells him she is okay, that he never lied about who he is and deep down she guesses she knew that, and now she just wants to get back to work.

Lucifer heads directly to Linda to ask for her advice about how to help Chloe; he thinks that Chloe is in denial. Linda thinks Lucifer is reeling because his devil face has returned, that it returned because he liked killing Pierce, and he expected Chloe to reject him. What Lucifer hears is that he has to pretend everything is okay and pick away at Chloe’s denial.

Lucifer's next move is to tell Ella that he is the Devil. Of course, she doesn’t believe and jokes with him about it. He even tells her about Amenadiel, but she just laughs it off. Chloe seems uncomfortable and changes the subject asking for the latest forensics from the beehive. Ella discovers that the honey scraper wasn’t Bob’s because of the type of honey on it. Bob specialized in flavored honey, but the scraper just had plain honey on it. Chloe and Lucifer head to the Farmer’s Market and discover only one other honey booth. Lucifer points out that now that Chloe knows about him, she can be in on the joke – he tells the truth, and mortals do anything to deny it. Chloe says it's kind of mean, of course no one will believe him, instead, they will just try to figure out his metaphor. Lucifer then mojos honey booth owner, Glenn Dobbs, who admits to wanting Bob dead, but only because he was frightened of him. He confesses to destroying Bob’s beehive, and Bob retaliated by beating Glenn with a bag full of doorknobs. Glenn was in the hospital when Bob was murdered.

Chloe realizes they are being followed, and they duck into a building. When the tail catches up with them, Lucifer grabs the man by the throat and lifts him to arm's length, but Chloe makes him let go when when she spots his badge; he is a U. S. Marshal. Marshal Luke Reynolds informs Chloe that Bob was in witness protection. He used to be an enforcer for the Paradiso crime family, and the Paradisos just happen to be in the area, so Chloe and Lucifer offer to talk to them.

Chloe returns home to find Maze cuffed in the living room. Maze assures her that she will not harm her or Trixie. Chloe knows she won’t, so Maze snaps the cuffs and Chloe says that wasn't the best way to assure she felt safe. Maze asks to see Trixie, but Chloe tells her that Trixie is still upset with Maze, and she doesn’t see that changing anytime soon, so Trixie is staying with Dan. Maze is clearly saddened by the news.

Having taken Charlotte to Heaven personally at the end of the previous season, Amenadiel returns to Earth. Lucifer is surprised that he returned, but that he was happy for his brother because he got what he wanted: Heaven. Lucifer says he might get what he wants, too, that Chloe knows about him now. When Amenadiel is ready to console Lucifer, the Devil says she appears to be fine with it. Amenadiel imparts the confirmation of his theory; angels do self actualize.

The following day, Chloe and Lucifer find the Paradisos having a family gathering and speak to Frank “The Pool Boy” Paradiso. He says he hasn’t seen Bob, but Lucifer finds a jar of avocado honey from Bob’s stand, so Frank comes clean, saying he got a note that Bob was in LA, but they didn’t have any reason to kill Bob. In fact, he says his family owes Bob for putting their uncle in jail. They happened to be visiting LA, so they visited Bob. Frank says he gave the note to Bob.

Chloe calls Dan to ask to check the security footage from the Farmer’s Market to see if Frank’s story is true. Lucifer reaches out to touch Chloe’s shoulder and she recoils from him. Chloe says she was startled and everything is fine, but obviously it is not; she quickly walks away.

Later, Chloe and Marshal Reynolds go over the evidence. She believes the Paradisos, Frank even has an alibi for the night of the murder. She suggests whoever wrote the note is the killer. She asks if Lenore knew about Bob’s past, but Reynolds says he has never met her so he doesn’t know. Chloe says Lenore and Frank gave conflicting stories, leading her to assume that Lenore did know about Bob’s past and the note.

Lucifer goes to Dan, asking why a woman would recoil at his touch. Dan gets angry, telling him they are not friends, not any more, but will give him an answer, “It means that they hate you, that they want you as far away from them as possible, because your very touch makes them recoil in disgust. What? No funny quip to that?” When Chloe returns, looking for Lucifer, he is gone. Dan offers to go with her to question Lenore.

Lucifer returns to Linda telling her Chloe is in deeper denial than he thought. She suggests he is projecting his issues on to whatever or whomever he is dealing with at the moment. Lucifer hears that as Chloe is projecting her issues on to to case, so he has to help Chloe with the case to help her understand her feelings. Linda tells him to try and understand his feeling as well, but Lucifer scoffs. Chloe and Dan arrive at Lenore’s house but she is gone, and she left in a hurry. Lucifer arrives and uses the case to question Chloe. Did she find out the truth and leave? Was she disgusted by him? Or was she just scared? He says they need to understand her state of mind to understand why she left in a hurry. Ella points out that in addition to a go bag, Lenore took her wedding album. That wasn't something she would take if she had killed Bob. Dan says he saw Reynolds on the security footage talking to both Bob and Lenore. Chloe recalls he said he never met Lenore, so now they need to find Reynolds.

Dan makes some calls about Reynolds and finds out that a couple of his previous assignments are also dead. One was killed by former associates, another was killed by a girlfriend. Chloe and Lucifer suggest that Reynolds told the old associates where to find the men, but no one took the bait about Bob, so Reynolds killed him. Chloe thinks Reynolds told Lenore about Bob’s past life, but she stayed with him anyway. Ella finds Reynolds’ GPS signal and sends Chloe and Lucifer to his location.

Reynolds has Lenore tied to a chair sitting on the edge of the community swimming pool. Reynolds planned to kill Lenore and frame “Pool Boy” Paradiso. Reynolds explains that he is punishing the bad guys, Witness Protection is just rewarding them for monstrous behavior. When Chloe points out Lenore isn't a bad guy, he says even if she isn’t, “She forgave him, even when he was exactly the same monster he'd always been.”

Lucifer is furious, and approaches Reynolds, “So, maybe he slipped up, we all do sometimes, but at least he was trying to make a better life for himself, and you stole it.” He grabs for the gun and Reynolds shoots Lucifer through the hand, before pushing Lenore into the pool and making a run for it. Chloe jumps in after Lenore and Lucifer goes after Reynolds. Reynolds gets in his car, and tries to run, but Lucifer holds the car back while holding a light post. Even injured, Lucifer has the strength to hold the vehicle in place. Chloe arrives and cuffs Reynolds, when she looks, Lucifer is gone.

Maze delivers a bounty to the police station and sees Trixie sitting at Dan’s desk. She doesn’t say anything and turns to leave. Trixie sees her and calls to her; Maze tearfully apologizes for what she said. Trixie runs into her arms and gives Maze a hug, saying says she could not stay mad at her. Maze realizes that Chloe lied to keep Trixie away from her.

Amenadiel visits Dan and lets him know that he is staying in LA, and to tell him that Charlotte is in Heaven. Dan gets upset, thinking that Amenadiel is patronizing him. So Amenadiel looks him in the eye and says it again. Dan lets go a sob of relief, he doesn’t know why, but he believes him.

That evening, Chloe goes to the penthouse and finally talks to Lucifer about what she saw. He responds, “I've had literal eons to come to terms with what you saw; my monstrous side...but it's not all that I am. At least, I hope not.” Chloe takes his hand and says she only sees her partner. He is relieved and gratified, saying if she can accept him, then that really is all that matters.

After leaving Lux, Chloe visits a church and takes a seat before she begins sobbing. A priest sits next to her, telling her she knew this would be difficult, but it is what is best for everyone on Earth, including Lucifer. He asks if she’s ready for the next step. Chloe collects herself and says she is.
