"Detective Amenadiel" is the fifth episode of the fifth season of Lucifer.[1]
Summary[]
"Amenadiel helps Chloe investigate a nun's untimely demise. Meanwhile, Lucifer lends Dan a hand, and Linda reveals a painful part of her history."
Plot[]
Lucifer brings Chloe to the beach where he shows her the location in which he burned his wings previously. He offers her a gesture of burning a gift, highlighting the fact that she is not just a gift from God. Chloe dismisses the effort, however, and asks him to give her some space whilst she figures the whole situation out.
Lucifer struggles with Chloe's reaction and visits Linda at home, asking for help with Chloe's situation. Linda tries to tell Lucifer that Amenadiel has returned from Hell, but Lucifer interrupts her before she can. When Amenadiel emerges from the baby's room, a surprised Lucifer questions why Amenadiel has returned from Hell. his brother explains that God told Amenadiel that Hell no longer requires a warden and that both Lucifer and Amenadiel are free to stay on Earth, confounding the brothers.
Maze meets with Linda following the confrontation with her mother. Linda defends Lilith, however, which annoys Maze. To alleviate Mazikeen's anger, Linda explains that she was once in a similar situation and gave up a child when she was 17. This admission angers Maze who storms off.
At the precinct, Amenadiel tries to talk to Chloe, but she wants to distance herself from anything "God related." Chloe is then handed a case of a murdered novitiate nun, Victoria Reynard. Chloe finds the situation whole ironic, and when she snaps at the nuns she realizes she needs help and calls Amenadiel, wondering if he has mojo that can help, as his brother does. Whilst Amenadiel explains that he cannot slow time or use the same abilities as Lucifer, all of the nuns around are drawn towards him, their expressions reflection awe and love. Chloe thinks he may have mojo after all, and he says this had never happened before.
Meanwhile, Linda talks with Maze again about her experience, explaining that she was alone throughout the pregnancy, but felt as though she could give her child a better life without her. Maze realizes that this is the reason Linda believes her to be going to Hell, but Maze shocks her, revealing that she knows where her daughter, Adriana, currently is. Maze and Linda arrive at an open house being run by a blond realtor, Linda's daughter. Linda is shocked at the revelation and struggles to speak coherently, but is grilled by Maze over her abandonment issues.
On the case, Amenadiel and Chloe talk with the nuns, but she is unable to get much information from them, given they are all hugely fascinated with Amenadiel. Eventually she leaves the room and lets him speak to them alone. He discovers that Mother Superior was involved in a murder prior to taking the veil, and Chloe speculates the victim discovered the crime. Mother Superior, however, turns herself in and explains that at 16 years old, she murdered someone in self-defense, but reconciled with God after joining the convent; she denies killing Victoria. With Lucifer's help, Dan discovers Victoria was connected to pop star Destiny Page and informs Chloe.
Amenadiel and Chloe confront Destiny Page over the murder, and it is revealed that Destiny sent Victoria as a spy when Mother Superior wouldn't sell the convent. She denies, however, killing Victoria after fell in love with the life and opted to become a nun. Chloe asks Dan and Lucifer for help verifying Destiny’s alibi. The two proceed to the goat yoga class she said she was in and verify her alibi. They notice one of the women at the yoga class wearing an engagement ring around her neck on a chain — Lucifer and Dan quickly link this to the odd bruising on the victim's neck.
One of the nuns arrives at the precinct and asks to speak with Amenadiel. When he encourages her just to do what is in her heart, expecting a confession, she kisses Amenadiel instead, shocking the angel and amusing his watching brother. The nun tries to explain why she did that, and Amenadiel seems to understand what she was acting on was a reflection of her love for God, intensified by his presence. She then reveals that Victoria found a secret room in the convent and used it for meditation. The angel and the detective go to investigate. They are interrupted by Hank, Destiny Page's security man, and it is quickly apparent that he killed Victoria during an argument. When Hank fires his weapon, Amenadiel steps in front of Chloe protecting her whilst simultaneously revealing his angelic wings, and uses them to take down Hank, who is thereafter terrified of the angel.
In the aftermath, Amenadiel explains his thinking to Chloe. The nuns reacted to him because he reflected their love of God back on them. People react to Lucifer because he reflects their desires back on them. When she points out she is immune to Lucifer's mojo, the angel smiles and says that was the gift from God, not her, but her ability to see Lucifer for who he truly is, and that their relationship was as real as it gets. Chloe is happy and relieved that what she had felt was real, and heads to Lucifer's penthouse. She tells him that by Amenadiel's logic, Lucifer chooses to be vulnerable around her. Lucifer scoffs at first, then realizes that his brother may be right. Chloe then tells him that she then chooses to be vulnerable around him, and the two kiss.

Trivia[]
- The episode title is said by Lucifer to Amenadiel in the precinct when they bring back the first suspect in the case.
- Amenadiel realizes that he and his angelic brethren reflect specific traits of humanity back at people.
- Lucifer's mojo reflects desire, making whomever the mojo is used on reveal their deepest wish.
- Michael's mojo pulls out deeply buried fears and regrets, making humans depressed and fear going to hell.
- Amenadiel passively reflects faith, causing religious humans to feel at ease around him.
- This explains why Ella acted oddly when she met Amenadiel. And also nuns surrounded Amenadiel and they felt at ease.
- After Chloe Decker found out that Amenadiel was responsible for her being born, she questioned if he was actually her biological father, which he quickly dismissed. This could be a reference to a popular fan theory that Amendiel was indeed Chloe's father when it was revealed back in "Quid Pro Ho" that he was responsible for her conception.
- Chloe realizes the only way she was "made for Lucifer" was to be completely immune to his mojo. Amenadiel believes that this means she can truly see Lucifer for who he is; which is why the two fell in love, not because Chloe was "programmed" to do so.
- The plot of a pop star trying to purchase a convent is likely a reference to Katy Perry purchasing a convent from the Catholic Church that was run by the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart
