|“||Dan was always just looking out for me, you know?||„|
|— Carol to Ella Lopez|
in "Is This Really How It's Going To End?!"
Carol is first mentioned by Dan when he tries to set him up with the quirky, forensic scientist Ella Lopez. Dan speaks very highly of Carol, saying what a great guy he is. He proceeds to talk about how they met through the police academy and that they were partnered up together. He then goes on to say how Carol had to move back East a few years ago to take care of his ill mother, but is now back in town and doesn't know anybody, hinting that Ella should introduce herself to him. Although Ella appreciates what Dan is trying to do for her, she kindly turns it down, telling Dan that she is finally at peace with everything that happened with Pete Daily and that she doesn't want to throw another man into the mix.
Ella and Carol finally meet in person while attending Dan’s funeral. Carol tells her that Dan was always looking out for him, to which Ella replies that he did the same thing for her too and that he looked out for everyone else as well. Before she leaves to go speak with Amenadiel, she asks for Carol to save her a seat.
During Amenadiel’s eulogy speech about Dan. Carol and Ella can be seen sat next to each other.
