Gaius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known by his childhood nickname, Caligula, was the third emperor of Rome from 37 to his death in 41.

Roman emperor from 37 to 41, succeeding his uncle, Tiberius. After his accession Caligula rapidly squandered the vast amount Tiberius had accumulated in the state treasury. He plundered Gaul, then marched his troops to the northern shore of Gaul as a prelude to the invasion of Britain, but then ordered them to collect seashells which he called the spoils of the conquered ocean. Four months after his return from Gaul, Caligula was murdered at the Palatine Games by the tribune of the Praetorian guard, and others.
