When Dad kicked you out, the whole family was rocked, me especially.
— Azrael to Lucifer Morningstar
in "Boo Normal"

Azrael is an Angel and one of Lucifer Morningstar's younger siblings. She is a recurring character in the series, first introduced in Season 3 and later making a final appearance in Season 5 as a minor character. Much to her nickname, "Angel of Death", Azrael is responsible for collecting dead Human souls and bringing them to their destination in the afterlife, either being Heaven or Hell. Due to the nature of her job, she was granted her own unique blade that is capable of eradicating any entity from existence. She was very close with Lucifer, but after he was banished to Hell, she never payed him a visit, feeling it would be awkward.

After meeting Ella Lopez, on what apparently was a false alarm, she grew fond of her, lying that she was a Ghost, and manipulated events to have her move to Los Angeles so that she and Lucifer could be friends. A year later, she discovered that she planned on moving back to Detroit and managed to talk her out of moving back, and being more open with her friends about her issues. She and Lucifer finally reunitte after millennia, where she told him about her influence and the two reconciled.

Two years later, after God decided to retire, and it was up to either Lucifer or Michael to replace him, Azrael appeared to Lucifer during the final battle to only apologize for Chloe Decker's immediate death. However, after Lucifer proved himself worthy as the new Sovereign of Heaven by willing to sacrifice himself to save the woman he loved, and defeating Michael by sparring his life, Azrael bent a knee with the others in recognizing Lucifer as the new God.

Biography[]

History[]

Creation[]

Azrael was one of the many Angels created by God and Goddess.[1] As the Angel of Death, she was responsible to taking the souls of the Humans to Heaven or Hell. She was very close to her older brother Lucifer Morningstar and enjoyed pranking Amenadiel with him.[2] God entrusted her with the Blade of Death that could eradicate peoples' souls, including Celestials.[3]

Abandoning her Brother[]

Sometime after Lucifer rebelled, she meant to come visit him in Hell, but became too busy dealing with souls, as the Angel of Death. Eventually, she figured it had become to awkward after thousands of years and opted not visit him at all.[2]

Meeting Ella Lopez[]

On one of her many assignments, Azrael went to collect Ella Lopez's soul when she had gotten into a car accident when she was eight, only to discover it was a false alarm. However, unlike all the other souls she encountered, Ella's was so sweet that she wanted to know her. So, whenever she was near collecting the most recent soul, she would check in on her and they became friends, being called her nickname Ray-Ray. However, feeling it was weird that people talk to invisible Angels, Azrael lied that she was a Ghost. However, that didn't help as people thought Ella was crazy.

When Ella was grown up and became forensic scientist, Azrael advised her to transfer the Los Angeles Police Department, because she knew Lucifer was working as a consultant there and thought that Lucifer could help Ella and vice versa. Before she left to L.A., the two agreed to never talk to each other again.[2]

Losing her Blade[]

Uriel stole her blade while she wasn't looking when he went to Earth, with the intention of eradicating their mom so she couldn't return to Heaven and destroy God. The plan failed, and Uriel ended up being the one eradicated by Lucifer.[3]

Convincing Ella Where She Belongs[]

Unwelcome Reunion[]

Azrael reunites with Ella Lopez.

Hearing that Ella planned on moving back Detroit with her family, Azrael opted to convince her to stay in L.A. She surprised Ella in her lab while she was looking at forensics on the latest case. Ella questioned why Azrael was here when they agreed to never see each other again, but she confessed that she missed Ella. She admitted that it was nice to see her too, but was hoping that this part of her life, Azrael being around, was over and asked her to leave just as Chloe Decker walked in and asked what was wrong.

Ella lied that she was talking to the evidence, and Azrael stood back and listened to her come up with different ways to ask her to leave, while also giving Chloe information on the murder case they were currently working on. After Ella decided to search Beth Daly's house with Chloe, Azrael figured Ella was trying to avoid her, and once Chloe left the lab they continued to talk.

While Azrael wanted to hang out with Ella for a little bit, the latter was against it since she was a ghost. Azrael tried to make the situation better by reminding Ella how cool it is that she can see a ghost, but the forensic scientist wasn't thrilled by it because it wasn't normal, and that was all she wanted to be in L.A. as she liked not having any secrets from her colleagues.

Azrael tries to get Ella to be honest with her friends.

Azrael insisted Ella tell her friends about her, but she reminded her that when she did that in Detroit and everyone thought she was crazy. Seeing that Ella wouldn't budge on having her around, Azrael lied that she was here to help Ella solve the murder of Beth Daly because she met her soul in the "ghost world". Suspicious, Ella asked why Azrael didn't just lead with that, so she lied that it was "ghost rules" not to.

While not completely convinced by Azrael's claim of "ghost rules", Ella agreed to have her come with her and Chloe, so long as it meant that after the case was over, they never see each other again, to which Azrael sadly nodded in agreement. Ella finally cracked and allowed Azrael to tag alone, so long as she keeps a low profile around Chloe. Azrael agreed to those conditions.[2]

Tag Along Ghost[]

Arriving at Beth's office, Azrael complimented the architecture of the house as a way to remind Ella why it was best to stay in L.A., only to be shushed by the latter. After the confused Chloe left to search a room, Ella set up ground rules with Azrael; no speaking unless spoken and void being creepy. Azrael tried to lighten the mood by saying she watches Ella in the shower, but she wasn't in the mood for her jokes.

Azrael tags along on Ella's case.

Ella opened a closet where she finds a full body costume of a wolf with overalls. Azrael tried to remember if Ella was into that sort of thing when she was younger, but she clarified that she was into cosplay. When Azrael commented that the reason she got confused was because it wasn't easy to keep track of all her hobbies, Ella reminded her that she had those hobbies to distract herself from her, and asked her to give her space just as Chloe returned.

Getting a new lead at the Golden State Furry Convention about a man named Wesley that Beth and another woman were fighting over, Azrael and Ella remained in the van listening to Chloe as she went undercover as Beth wearing her Furry costume. Ella asked Azrael if she could ask Beth's spirit to describe Wesley. Though Azrael claimed that was a "no-no", Ella insisted she do it to help Beth's spirit.

Azrael pretends to communicate with Beth Daly.

Pretending to try and communicate with Beth's spirit, Azrael lied that she couldn't get through do to bad service. Unconvinced, Ella realized that Azrael doesn't know Beth at all and demanded to know how she could lie to her. Deciding to reveal part of the truth, Azrael says that she's here for personal reasons. Ella figured that meant solving Beth's murder would allow Azrael to finally find peace and cross over, which the Angel of Death went along with.

After Chloe found the woman who was threatening Beth over Wesley, Azrael joined Chloe and Ella in the interrogation room and listened to them ask questions. They learned that Wesley wasn't a guy, but the name of her original character that Beth copied. When the woman's alibi involved doing a seminar on building a backstory on your fursona's backstory, Chloe asked Ella if that was real, only for to state that she wouldn't know due to her being normal. Azrael, however, booed normal, much to Ella's annoyance.[2]

Revealing Her True Motives[]

Azrael returned to Beth's office where Ella started looking for new evidence after learning that Beth got into a fight. Noticing a picture of a beach, Azrael tried to talk Ella into going with her after they "crush this case". Ella, however, reminded her that wouldn't be possible as after the case was over, Azrael would crossing over. When she didn't respond, Ella realized she was still lying to her.

Azrael reveals her true intentions.

Coming clean, Azrael confessed that the real reason she was here was because of her; she didn't want Ella to move back to Detroit to be with her selfish brothers. After defending them, Ella believed they needed her, but Azrael, however, believed they use Ella's kindness and that her friends in L.A. don't take advantage of her kindness. However, Ella reminded her, again, that her friends don't know about Azrael, but her family does and accept it because they love her.

Azrael and Ella hide in the closet.

Azrael saw it from a different perspective; she needed some looking out for her after she looked out for everybody else. While still bitter over Azrael lying to her, Ella thanked her for carrying about her. Before they could continue their conversation, the noise of keys jingling in the door made them realize someone was trying to break in and they hid in the closet. Ella questioned why Azrael was hiding when no one could see her. Azrael didn't have an answer.

After Ella made a noise, the intruder opened the closet door, only for Ella to point a flashlight at the intruder's eyes, distracting him long enough for her to grab a broom and try to jab him with it. Azrael watched the fight. When the intruder took the broom away from Ella, Azrael told her to kick him in the "nards". The intruder dropped the broom and ran away. Azrael questioned why she let him get away, only for Ella to reveal they have his fingerprints on the broom.[2]

Interrogating Johnathan Burke[]

Unfortunately, the fingerprints on the broom were too smudged to get any ID, but there was traces of chalk and rosin. Azrael followed Ella as she reported her findings to Chloe. With the little knowledge they had, coupled with surveillance footage Chloe found of a car speeding away with a Rancho Middle School, the school where two of their suspects go to, sticker on it, Azrael deduced that it could've been a teacher who attacked her at Beth's office, which Ella already deduced.

After Ella suggested investigating the music teacher, Jonathan Burke, using clues from the evidence, Azrael was impressed by her detective skills. She then stood back in the interrogation room again as Chloe and Ella interrogated Jonathan. She and the others learned that the reason he was in Beth's office was to get a check five grand because he was worried it would lead the police to him and revealed his alibi.

Azrael then leaned in on Chloe and Ella's private conversation, but it was stopped when Johnathan heard them talking about Beckett Wilson. She, and the others, learned that the traumatized girl that Dan Espinoza and Lucifer were with was a "nightmare", leading them to suspect that she might be a part of Beth's murder.[2]

Getting Ella to Come Clean[]

Later that day, Azrael stood in Ella's lab as she looked at more forensics for the case. Chloe then entered and asked if Ella was okay due to her behavior today. When Ella began to confess that she sees a ghost, Azrael was ecstatic that she was finally coming clean to her friend, only to be saddened when she chickened out. After Ella and Chloe talk about her moving home, Chloe revealed a new suspect - Felix's mom - and the three headed to their house.

Azrael and Ella waited in the car, while Chloe talked to the mother. While there, Azrael said she understood why she chose not to tell Chloe the truth, as she was afraid that even her friends wouldn't accept her and her ability to talk to ghosts. When she tried to then offer a rebuttal, Ella halted her and stated it was too risky and didn't want her friends in the LAPD to ever look at as if she was crazy.

Azrael tried to reassure her that her friends in L.A. were true friends and tried to use Chloe as an example, but Ella, while agreeing that Chloe was a good person, said that she was about things she could see and prove and believed she wouldn't believe her if she told her with no evidence to back up her claim. Ella then spotted the neighbors construction dumpster and went to examine it, much to Azrael's confusion.

She watched Ella go through trash and questioned what the point was. Ella shared her theory that the killer threw the murder weapon in the neighbors' construction dumpster, to which Azrael complimented how good she was at her job. Ella then finds a bloodstained bookend. Azrael then noticed Felix's dad, Anthony, about to attack her and she warned Ella just in time.

Azrael then observed the fight between Ella and Anthony, before Chloe arrived and arrested him. That night, as they were taking Anthony into custody, Ella finally told Chloe the truth regarding Azrael, which she accepted. She then walked over to the Angel of Death who bragged that she was right regarding her friends.

Azrael and Ella bid farewell.

Seeing that the deal was for her to leave after the case was closed, Azrael prepared to say goodbye to Ella, only for her friend to ask her if she's been looking out for ever since the car accident as a "Ghost Guardian Angel". When she answered yes, Ella decided it was okay to have Azrael spot in once in a while, so long as she didn't spy on her in the shower. Azrael agreed to those terms, and the two bid each other farewell.[2]

Reunited After Millenia[]

Knowing Lucifer was aware of her interacting with Ella, she comes to his penthouse, wings unveiled, where he bitterly greeted her due to her abandoning him for Millenia in Hell. Azrael retracted her wings and defended her actions as not abandoning him, but just busy being the Angel of Death and taking souls to either Heaven or Hell.

Seeing Lucifer still angry, Azrael apologized for not reaching out after God banished him to Hell, and said she was going to but lost track of time and eventually decided against it, feeling it would be weird. When Lucifer sarcastically remarked that their reunion was still weird, Azrael told him that after their Father banished him the whole family was rocked, especially her because she lost her favorite big brother.

Not accepting her apology, Lucifer poured himself a drink at his bar, but Azrael tried to reminisce on all the fun they had pranking Amenadiel in Heaven, which seemed to get through to him. She said that she missed him listening to her droning off about whatever was on her mind, whether or not it was important to him.

She apologized again for her mistake, but reminded him that he started a rebellion against God, which meant no one was perfect. Accepting her point, Lucifer questioned why she was here and how Ella fit into all of it, though not carrying that she interacted with Humans like God would. He sat down on his coach and she told him the story of her car accident and how it was a false alarm but didn't want to leave due to her personality, to which Lucifer agreed with.

Azrael reveals she brought Ella to L.A.

She explained that she visited Ella whenever she was in town, but realized that her talking to her either as the Angel of Death or a ghost wasn't helping her, so she sent her to L.A. to be with him. This got Lucifer' attention as stood up and became annoyed that all his family members kept manipulating him by putting people in his path and walked back to his bar.

Azrael watches Lucifer and Ella.

Azrael, however, revealed that she actually did it for both of them, figuring that if she couldn't be with either of them, at least her favorite people could be friends. Seeing that Azrael was telling the truth, he attempted to talk to her, only for to vanish. Later that night, Azrael watched from the bullpin as Lucifer started talking to Ella regarding her forensics to try and be more of a brother to her. She smiled to herself and walked away.[2]

God's Retirement Party[]

Though Azrael couldn't attend their Father's retirement party on Earth due to her job as the Angel of Death, she had Gabriel give her regards to Lucifer and Amenadiel.[4]

Battle for Supremacy[]

Collecting Chloe's Soul[]

Azrael comes to collect Chloe Decker's soul.

While Azrael wasn't present during the voting of who would replace their Father as God, she appeared during the battle between Lucifer and Michael, surprising Lucifer. Lucifer believed she there to assist him in battle, but, Azrael sadly tells Lucifer that she's sorry. Realizing what she meant, Lucifer screamed in agony as Michael impales Chloe Decker with Zadkiel's Staff, mortally wounding her. After she died, Azrael took her soul to Heaven.[5]

Accepting the New God[]

Azrael bows before Lucifer.

After Lucifer resurected Chloe by sacrificing himself by going to Heaven, Azrael went back down to Earth to see the outcome of the battle. When Lucifer was mysteriously resurrected, he ended up sparing Michael's life, and instead severed his wings with the Flaming Sword, granting him a second chance. With Lucifer defeating Michael, and proving himself, Azrael, like the other Angels, bowed to Lucifer, accepted him as the new God.[5]

Returning Her Blade[]

After Lucifer and Chloe's future daughter, Aurora Morningstar, gave a warning that Lucifer disappears from their lives before she is born, Lucifer believes it's because he was murdered. To insure that didn't happen, Lucifer returned Azrael's Blade to her.[6]

Personality[]

Lucifer Morningstar described her as "no sweet peach", implying her personality rubbed off on the dagger; as Mazikeen put it "that's one angry-ass knife", Lucifer is her favorite brother between her siblings.

When she showed up in Los Angeles it's shown that she's the opposite of what Lucifer described, being rather friendly, and even while with the blade, she developed a close friendship with Ella Lopez. This suggests that her more violent personality was the product of using the sword. Lucifer's comment may have also been out of bitterness since Azrael, who he had once been very close to, never took the time to visit him after his banishment.

During her interactions with Lucifer, Azrael was shown to care deeply for her brother and to love him greatly. Azrael clearly looked up to Lucifer and loved pranking Amenadiel with him. Even after not seeing Lucifer since his rebellion, she still cared greatly about him and missed him deeply, regretting the fact that she never came to visit him. Her bringing Ella to L.A. was designed purely to bring her two favorite people together, so that Lucifer and Ella would have each other, when she couldn't be there for them.

Azrael is shown to always be on Lucifer's side in conflicts despite her busy job. She appeared during the war between Michael and Lucifer due to Chloe Decker being about to be murdered by the former. Knowing how much anguish Lucifer would be in, Azrael could only give a heartbroken "Sorry, Lu" to her brother as a warning.

Powers and Abilities[]

Azrael in her Angel form

Azrael shares many of the same abilities as all other Angels. However, as the Angel of Death, she also interacts with the dead. She's also supposedly very powerful as Lucifer Morningstar stated mid-battle against Michael that with the Angel of Death on his side he "can't lose".

  • Angel Physiology: As an Angel, Azrael has their powers as well as their weaknesses.
    • Superhuman Strength: Azrael, like all Angels, has immense levels of superhuman strength and can exert, lift and carry an unbelievable amount of force and mass.
    • Superhuman Speed: Azrael, like all Angels, has tremendous superhuman speed, she can appear and disappear much faster than the Human eye could see.
    • Superhuman Reflexes: Azrael, like all Angels, has incredible superhuman reflexes, and react, dodge, or catch incoming damage at immense speeds.
    • Immortality: As an angelic celestial being, Azrael is immune to age, having lived since the beginning of creation, and is also impossible to harm by any means which can kill or injure mortals easily. However, she can be harmed by supernatural weapons and means.
    • Flight: Azrael's wings allow him to fly. She can fly as fast or faster than the speed of light in which he would seemingly disappear from the Human eye, in a similar manner, akin to teleportation.
      • Dimensional Travel: Azrael is able to travel between Heaven, Hell, and Earth.
    • Death Awareness: Azrael knows when death is supposed to happen and pops up right before it happens. Though sometimes blind chance gives "false alarms" like Ella Lopez. Just before Chloe Decker died, she appeared to give her sympathies to Lucifer before she died.
    • Invisibility: Azrael has the power to appear invisible and choose who can see her. Typically only dead Humans will be able to see her.
    • Shape-Shifting: Azrael is capable of altering her true angelic appearance, making herself look like a human female, hiding her wings.

Weaknesses[]

  • Demon Daggers Forged In Hell: Demon Daggers are able to lethally harm all Angels.
  • Other Supernatural Beings: Like all other Angels, Azrael can be killed by other supernatural beings, which included other Angels and Demons.
  • Self - Actualization All Angels are able to self-actualize, which results in their judgements manifesting as psychosomatic changes, as shown with Amenadiel losing his Angel wings and Lucifer Morningstar regaining his despite cutting them off. Azrael should be vulnerable to this weakness just as any other Angel.
  • Flaming Sword: Azrael can be eradicated with her personal blade or the completed Flaming Sword.
