My flock is your flock, this I swear.
— Abel to Chloe Decker
in "Infernal Guinea Pig"

Abel was Eve's son and the brother of Cain as well as the world's first murder victim.

History[]

Early History[]

Abel was Adam and Eve's second son, his elder brother was Cain. He worked as a shepherd, and had a large flock of sheep, "Do you know how many sheep I possess? Enough for two wives. Enough to feed our offspring and our offspring's offspring." He was apparently his mother's favorite, as Eve referred to him as her sweet and gentle Abel, when everyone else held a differing view of him.

Abel never got along with Cain, and the two were constantly fighting. Eventually they fought to the death with Cain killing Abel, although Cain pointed out that Abel wanted to kill him just as much, "Do you know how many times I've tried to tell people Abel is the asshat? No one ever believes me."

Hell[]

Abel spent the next few millennia in Hell as their first tenant. Mazikeen and the other demons learned to torture by torturing him. Abel's Hell loop would start out with him partying and pursuing women, but then Cain would show up and kill him. The demons would switch up the loop, changing the time period or location, but it would always end the same, "He speaks in English, and all the romance languages. Arabic, Mandarin. I mean, he's a little dated, and his Hindi needs work....Me and the other demons would get bored, so we'd switch up the Hell loop. ... He was a fast learner." So Hell, in effect, made Abel a polyglot who was completely adaptable to new situations.

Throughout the Series[]

In "Infernal Guinea Pig", in an attempt to remove Cain's mark, Lucifer tells Cain, "I shall fly down to Hell, pluck your brother's soul, and drop it into a vacant body. This would make Abel technically alive, and therefore not murdered, and you innocent." Abel's soul is then mistakenly deposited in the body of a young woman, Bree Garland, instead of a 97 year old man as initially intended.

Abel awakens and leaves the hospital immediately, in pursuit of women who might agree to have sex with him, not realizing that he is now housed in a woman's body. Eventually, Amenadiel who disapproves of Lucifer's plan, tracks him down in hopes of taking him back to Hell. Mauricio Solis, of a Bolivian drug cartel, shows up to kill Bree, however, and Abel, using a gun Amenadiel gave him to shoot himself, kills Solis. Lucifer and Cain arrive at the scene just then, but Abel disappears in the chaos.

Later, Cain asks Maze how he might track his brother and she tells him, "Every now and again, the sucker would do something I never saw coming," and at the point, Abel shows up at the penthouse and shoots Cain. As Abel does a happy dance, Cain resurrects, terrifying Abel, who begs his brother to kill him quickly. But Cain says he needs Abel alive, and since Bree Garland is wanted in connection to a bomb and the Bolivian drug cartel, Abel is taken to the LAPD station for safety. There, while flirting with Chloe Decker and Charlotte Richards, he agrees to help with the case, "Yes, to whatever those words mean." He accompanies Lucifer and Chloe to Bree's office and, using her fingerprint, they open a file cabinet rigged with another bomb. Chloe manages to defuse the bomb, saving their lives.

With the close of the case, Cain tells Lucifer, "Abel's how my curse started, he's got to be the way it ends. As long as he's alive, I still have hope. " It was at that moment; Abel fails to navigate the street outside Lux and is struck and killed by a speeding ambulance.

In "Expire Erect", Amenadiel discovers a resurrected Eve in Lucifer's penthouse and asks if she has come to Earth seeking revenge for Cain's death at Lucifer's hands. Eve says she met Charlotte Richards before leaving Heaven, and calls Abel her sweet and gentle boy, she therefore believes that Cain probably got what was coming to him.

Personality[]

According to Cain, Abel is an "asshat" who is not innocent, after all, after dying he ended up in Hell. Cain says, "Abel wanted to kill me just as much as I wanted to kill him. Why do you think he's in Hell?" Abel's Hell loop seems to confirm Cain's belief. His mother Eve, however, states that Abel was sweet and gentle. Maze calls Abel a "total poon hound", i.e., a womanizer, adding, "He always runs to food or boobs. Usually boobs." He enjoys a good party and is constantly trying to sleep with women. He comes off as a jerk using pick-up lines like, "Let's be fruitful, and multiply. Allow me to bless you with my seed." Maze also described his personality as "caveman Lucifer" suggesting heightened carnal appetites but without any of the charm or class.

Abel has an intense fear of Cain and calls him his torturer, "Every time I seek out revelry, my brother arrives. He kills me. Over and over. And there's nothing I can do to avoid it. I've tried everything. Fighting him, running from him, all in vain. I'm trapped. I can never escape."

Due to his hell loop changing so much, Abel is slow to notice drastic changes, such as the fact he was in a woman's body, despite the obvious difference in anatomy; "Are those bosoms mine? So that's why none of those menfolk heard a word I said."

Abilities[]

So what you're saying is Hell made him multilingual and completely adaptable?
Lucifer in Infernal Guinea Pig
  • Multilingualism: Besides his native Sumerian, Abel speaks modern English, all the Romance languages (Catalan, French, Galician, Italian, Portuguese, Provençal, Romanian, Sardinian, Spanish etc.), Arabic, Mandarin, and Hindi (though Maze has noted that his Hindi could be improved). According to Maze, he is a quick learner, though some of his languages are often a bit dated.
  • Marksmanship: While inhabiting Bree Garland's body, Abel showed remarkable skills in shooting a gun, having killed a Bolivian hitman with a single shot to the head, and later shooting his brother in the heart after tracking him down.

Trivia[]

  • Abel's second death is humorous in more than one sense; he never picked up on traffic laws and its was an ambulance that ran him over. It's also humorous since Lucifer assumed him to be completely adaptable due to the updates to his hell loop, when really, he was unable to adapt properly in the time, he was alive again.
  • In the comics Abel is the host of the House of Secrets along with Cain who is the host of the House of Mystery.
  • It's unknown if Abel was returned to Hell after his second death or if he made it into Heaven. Though his mother, Eve had implied Abel actually did go to heaven; since she only had said Cain deserved hell.
