"A Little Harmless Stalking" is the thirteenth episode of the fifth season of Lucifer.[1]
Summary[]
Linda throws herself into a deeply personal mission. Maze unmasks a blast from the past. Amenadiel considers a new job.
Plot[]
The episode opens with Linda driving while talking to Mazikeen on the phone and learns Maze is growing a soul. Maze realizes what Linda is doing, but Linda hangs up before Maze can ask too many questions. She then follows someone, and before getting out of the car, grabs a gun.
Meanwhile, Lucifer is distracting himself with constructing a ship in a bottle. Amenadiel arrives, “Enough with these silly distractions, Luci!” and wants him to think about God’s retirement. Lucifer assumes Amenadiel will succeed Dad, but Amenadiel is reluctant. Lucifer advises him, “in situations like these when much is at stake, I like to ask myself, 'What's your knee-jerk reaction?' You obviously want this, so leap before you look." Amenadiel disagrees, and points out therapy has helped Lucifer be more mindful. The devil is offended, and agrees, “Therapy has ruined me! I've been overthinking all of my decisions when really, the answer is at our feet! 'Just do it.' Well, not my feet. I'm clearly a Louboutin man, but you know what I mean.”[2]
Downstairs he runs into Chloe who has to get an answer from him, “I can't wait, and it's not because you didn't say, you know, those words, 'cause, look, words are just words. And I think I know how you feel, but I - Right now, I just - I need to know. One way or another, I need to know if we're together.” [3] Lucifer says yes, they clearly want to be together so they should be. Chloe is happily relieved.
When they respond to a crime scene, Ella notes the hand holding going on and demands to know if they are together. They smile and respond, “Definitely together,” and she tells them it's about damn time. Dan emerges from the house and tells them Arthur Sterling was found dead inside. It looks like a robbery gone wrong, and he tells them to brace themselves. Inside he points out the confessed murderer – Dr Linda Martin. She confessed to killing Sterling and won’t say why, and when Lucifer mojos her, she responds that she is trying to protect her child, confusing Chloe who asks if Charlie is in danger. Linda refuses to say any more and Chloe is forced to take her in.
At the precinct, Maze asks her how she killed the man and Linda says, “really good....all the way dead.” When Maze points out she is lying, Lucifer and Chloe say they know, but not why. Maze knows, and Linda tries to stop her from telling, but Maze forces the issue and Linda confesses. She tells Lucifer and Chloe about her biological daughter, Adrianna (Alexandra Grossi). Since Maze found her, Linda has been keeping tabs on her – secretly – from a distance. A little harmless stalking never killed anyone.
Linda tells them she had followed her to Sterling's house. There was no one else there, so it looks like Adrianna killed the man. Linda refuses to believe that, and by confessing, she hopes to give Adrianna time to getaway. Then Adrianna arrives at the station to confess to the murder. Linda and Lucifer watcher her in interrogation, and Linda doesn’t believe her. She saw Adrianna arguing with some “scary guy” the day before. She memorized his license plate, just in case. Chloe says they will look into it, but until then, Adrianna has to stay in jail.
Maze then goes to the scary guy Clive’s house to check him out, and is jumped by a woman in a mask. They fight, and Maze kicks the woman through a glass door. She picks her up and removes her mask; it’s Eve (Inbar Lavi). Eve says when she left to find herself, nothing clicked. She tried to think about when she was happiest, it was when she was on a case with Maze, so, she decided to become a bounty hunter. She asks Maze to work with her on finding Clive Winter, and Maze reluctantly agrees. Eve's check of the place turned up one unusual thing; a Hollingshead painting, something worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Adrianna’s boyfriend, Owen (Patrick Cage), arrives at the precinct to see her, and tells Chloe that Adrianna was having money trouble and took out a bad loan. He overheard her fighting on the phone with a woman named Jamie. That, and the Hollingshead painting, leads Chloe, Lucifer, and Linda to an art gallery. Chloe tells them to stay in the car, when they see a flower delivery van, which Linda had also seen at one of Adrianna's houses, they decide its time to go inside.
Gallery owner, Jamie Evington (Lena Georgas), has no time to talk to Chloe, but she does have time for Lucifer and Linda posing as buyers. Lucifer asks for art that is 'unattainable.' Jamie doesn’t actually say she can get him anything, but she will be in touch. He then buys a painting to grease the wheels. Outside he gives the painting to Chloe who says she never got a gift from a sting before. Lucifer had called her when he and Linda went in and she had heard everything, giving her enough cause to put a wiretap on Clive’s phone.
Meanwhile, at Lux, Amenadiel meets with a priest, rabbi, and an iman. Dan sees them and inquires about the meeting. Amenadiel says he might become God, and the clergy were a focus group as he tried to discover what they would like to see in a God. Dan is stunned by Amenadiel’s news.
When Amenadiel returns to relieve Ella from sitting with Charlie he asks her “Imagine if God was standing right here in front of you, asking you, 'How can I do a better job?'There's got to be something you would say.” [4]She says no, that’s the whole point of faith: acceptance. She says God is always there for her, and she knows He loves her. Amenadiel suggests that she take some of the faith she has in Him and put it in herself.
Maze and Eve arrive at a warehouse where they’re supposed to find Clive. While they wait, Maze asks Eve why she’s really there, and Eve admits that she came back for Maze. She apologizes for not getting what Maze was saying before, and says she wants to be with her. They then go into the warehouse and find the items from Sterling’s safe. Clive ambushes them and the fight is on. He’s able to separate them and pulls a gun on Maze. Eve climbs the shelves and jumps on the Clive’s back , and he throws her off and Maze tackles him. The gun goes off, and Eve is hit. Maze throws a flash grenade at Clive to knock him out, then she picks up Eve and carries her out.
Lucifer tells Linda that they found the murder weapon in the warehouse and only Adriana’s prints are on it. Linda is distraught and blames herself for how broken Adriana is. Lucifer tries to tell her some good news, but Linda thinks it’s about his relationship with Chloe, and takes him to task for being so self-centered. Lucifer remains calm and says he and Chloe decided to question Adriana again. Despite all of the evidence pointing to her, Linda believes she’s innocent, “My self-centeredness aside, I am trying to help. We all are, and we're not giving up.”[5]
Adriana doesn’t want to say any more than what’s in her written statement. Lucifer mojos her and she reveals she is trying to protect her mother, who is sick and the treatment is expensive. She joined Jamie’s scheme to make some money, but when she tried to back out, Jamie threatened to kill her mom. She heard that Sterling was returning home early and tried to call Clive to cancel. Clive told the police that he went to Vegas after Adriana called off the robbery on Friday night. Adriana says she didn’t even know about Sterling’s change in plans until Saturday night, and she went to the movies on Friday.
Linda disappears and Ella comes up with a break in the case. She processed the murder weapon a second time and found it was wiped down. And there was only one print from Adriana on the gun. She also found methyl acrylate on the gun, the substance on the sticky side of scotch tape. Someone used the tape to put Adriana’s print on the gun. Chloe says she checked Clive’s story and he was in Vegas and did receive a text from Adriana, calling off the robbery. So who else had access to Adriana’s phone while she was at the movies?
Linda finds Owen and holds him at gunpoint, and tells him to turn himself in. It was he who stole from Sterling and was caught. He used the gun in the safe to kill Sterling and planted it in the warehouse with Adriana’s fingerprint on it. Owen doesn’t admit to anything, but Chloe and Lucifer show up with the same accusation. Chloe arrests Owen while Lucifer consoles Linda, “You did it, Doctor. You saved your daughter.”[6]
At the precinct, Adriana sees Linda and recognizes her. Linda says she’s there because the police are her friends and are helping her with something. She tells Adriana that she’s glad that she okay. Lucifer finds Linda and asks why she hasn’t told Adriana who she is. Linda says it should be Adriana’s choice, and she might be afraid of rejection. Lucifer understands, “It makes perfect sense. You want to know her, to be with her, it's everything you've ever wanted, but you can't completely open yourself up because deep down you actually believe that you don't deserve her love. Because she's so perfect, and you're just, well... unworthy.” Linda compliments him on his insight and suggests he might become a therapist.
Maze visits Eve in the hospital and says she wants to be with Eve and gives Eve Lilith’s ring, imbued with her mother's immortality. Eve refuses the ring, saying mortality is a gift, it makes you appreciate life. Maze insists that Eve wear the ring or they can’t be together, she says she can’t lose Eve, and so rejects her, walking away.
That evening, Adriana visits Linda, and asks if Linda was helping with her case. Linda says she was. Adriana asks if Linda is her mom. Linda says she wanted to tell her, but she was scared Adriana didn’t want her. She thought Adriana should come to her and now she’s here. She then introduces her daughter to her son.
At Lux, Lucifer finds Amenadiel who is having doubts about being God. Lucifer tells him to do what makes him happy. His brother cites duty, and Lucifer has an epiphany, perhaps someone else worthy could take on the mantle, “I've just decided. I'm going to be God!”
