Biographie[]
McTavish est né à Glasgow, en Écosse, de Alec et Ellen McTavish. Alec était une personne politiquement active et le discours politique était courant dans le ménage McTavish. La famille a quitté Glasgow quand McTavish était un enfant. Au cours de sa vie, il a vécu au Canada, en Angleterre et en Écosse avant de s’installer en Nouvelle-Zélande. Les parents de McTavish étaient tous deux décédés avant 2014.
McTavish et sa femme, Gwen, vivent en Nouvelle-Zélande avec leurs deux filles nées en 2012 et en 2007.
